Wi-Fi Woes
Tonight is the second time I've picked a hotel based on their promise of in-room wi-fi and for the second time, it hasn't worked out. The first time was some hotel in Murfreesboro and it just plain didn't work. This time (at the Red Roof Inn), it works, but only if I go sit on the floor out in the hallway, next to the storage room that reportedly houses the router. Has anyone out there found a hotel that follows up on the promise of wi-fi?
Anyway, the good news is that we're just four or five hours from home, in Lexington, KY. We had a really enjoyable dinner and are looking forward to a good night's sleep before we race home in the morning to liberate the dog from the kennel. It will be great to be home and I have no plans to travel again any time soon. I have a lot of catching up to do...

Wingate Inns have been into in-room WiFi for a while. I've only stayed at one, outside Savannah, but its connection was reliable and fast. I had two laptops connected in one room (one ethernet, the other AirPort), and ran both with no problems.

I've had pretty good success with Sleep Inn. Their policy is to have wi-fi in every one of their hotels. However I've had to change rooms on one occasion to get a good signal. It might help to ask the desk clerk where the router is and ask for a room closer to it.

I've actually had really good luck with Days Inn. Somehow I always wind up there wherever I go, and everything usually works pretty well.
Now, I've found that the nicer the hotel/motel, they are more likely to charge for high speed (this really pisses me off). And they're usually the ones where it doesn't work properly.
Why would you charge over $100 for a room and not build in the cost of high speed internet?! It's just smart to do, else people like me get pissed off.
Oh I once spent a good portion of a trip to D.C. on the floor of a hotel lobby. They advertised free wifi, and the did have it, but only in the lobby, where there were only three chairs to sit in.
