No Toyota Plant for Chattanooga
It's all over the local news sources. Chattanooga did not get the Toyota automobile plan, Tupelo, Mississippi did. Tomorrow the TFP will have an actual article on how it all went down, as opposed to a press release. Onwards:
"...the city and state should not feel bad about finishing second or third."
Feel bad? I'd have rather had the jobs.

Have you ever heard "Mexico" by Jump Little Children? Given the trends in manufacturing here and globally, it begs to be the Chattanooga theme song for this fiasco.

Fiasco Joe? Having known many of the folks involved with the process I'd say they did okay and represented the community well.
Having worked with economic developers for several years now it's something to be said that Chattanooga has remade itself so that manufacturers would look seriously again - let alone be contenders for a Toyota auto plant.
Professionally, I've been called into several communities to do a market review and I'd say that the negative vibe in Chattanooga towards itself mirrors that of every community I've been to.
When living in any place it's far too easy to pick out its flaws and place them in more prominence than any of its assets - even if those assets outweigh the negatives.

The Proclaimers in "Sean":
"Sean I'd say the best one came from Tupelo, Mississippi
I'll tell you now that grown men cry and Irish girls are pretty."
Searching for this lyric sent me to wikipedia - it as a bunch of trivia about Tupelo. My favorite:
Krusty the Clown began his 50-year career as a street mime in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Yes, you're right - "fiasco" is too loaded of a word - I shouldn't have used it. "Situation" is better.
I don't mean to comment negatively or positively on the situation itself at all - I just like how the song matches up to the drama here.

chattanooga has a chilis. right. down. town. it's hard to find a flaw in that.

For some reason the chilis comment made me laugh harder than I've ever laughed at a blog comment. I'm gonna be in Chattanooga in a week and a half and if someone could fill me in on the Chili's happy hour I'd be much obliged.
