Thinking With Type

Thinking With Type

I've been reading this great book by Ellen Lupton called "Thinking With Type". It's immediately accessible, and then cranks up the detail as you move along. It was designed to be a textbook for classes on type, so I suppose it makes sense in that regard.

It's fairly mind-blowing, and it's fascinating how typographical theories (and the actual fonts themselves) parallel philosophical movements, even going so far as to carry their name such as Classical Revival or Humanist.

It's no wonder that designers find themselves so inclined towards the use of Flash, given the unbelievably weak type & font family support of native HTML, browsers, and most operating systems.

An unrelated aside: sometimes some good ol' screamin' and yellin' rock n' roll is apropos (more apostrophes!). So courtesy of Said the Gramophone, I give you T-T-T-Trepanning by Shinobu [ buy ].
