Sometimes Change Really Ticks Me Off
I know you can't stop it, but gosh, it wont ever end. First Isaac & Farron leaving. Then my pastor bailing on us. And now Win-Dixie closing. Cruel world why do you torture me so?
I'll miss Win-Dixie. Back in ye olde college days it was the place for getting film developed, buying large quantities of chek cola, and refilling your ramen supply (if you didn't feel like making the drive to Wal-Mart to save .02).
Like Bob pointed out, I'll miss the community aspect of Win-Dixie. It was in many ways St. Elmo's general store, and I'll miss running into people there, making what should have been a 10 minute egg run a 25 minute social experience.
Finally, on the St. Elmo neighborhood mailing list (which, if you live in St. Elmo and aren't on the list, by all means get on there) people have been talking about the closing, and I posted the following suggestion for what to do with the building. Some of these are St. Elmo inside jokes, some aren't:
A Boom-Trike Dealership
Manuel Rico's Monument World Expo!
Ed "Thunder" Sunder Campaign Headquarters
MojohoodkaStruck Cafe
The Chattem Outlet Mall
Forest Hill's North
Golden Mart Beauty Supply Super Center
Okie Dokie Market #6
The New Safari Pub (this time with 50% less fraud)

I love the idea of a Chattem Outlet Mall- I can buy my goldbond in bulk!

Have you ever been inside Golden Mart? They could really use the space. I've never seen a store so packed with stock. I'm sure it breaks half a dozen fire codes and the ADA law. You outta check it out sometime. And the half eaten kim chee sitting on the counter next to the register was truly disgusting.

I bet Bi-Lo or Publix will snap it up, so hopefully the general store aspect will still survive. but I like Joseph's idea of a Home Depot the best.

These days, a home depot can't survive on its own, it has to have a Lowe's next door! They are BFF.

do you really think bi-lo would get it? i thought they just closed their doors down the street. or was that b/c someone finally admitted to the fact that all their fish was actually regurgitated rat feces?
i am in a silly mood today. please excuse me.
in other news, peta lady runs naked in the park.

Come On, Win-Dixie? I loved the general store feel. But did you ever notice how no matter what few items your picked up it would at least be around 28 bucks or so? Everything was so inflated there. It is so great to run into our neighbors and get to know the employees in the check out lane, but I'm sorta excited about a change.
mark.

Mark, I realize Win-Dixie has gotta go, but just 'cause it was bad, doesn't mean it was all bad, and sometimes even seeing the bad go can get one, well, nostalgic or something. I just hope whatever DOES go in there plays something of a similar communal role that Win Dixie did.

my guess is that there is not enough land for a home depot. the depot could go in the OLD bilo parcel that is next to south end of wheland-vicinity.
incidentally, back before wheland closed, bilo was looking at a huge parcel off southbroad and putting in one of their super center type stores. then when 1500 employees were laid off bilo decided that was too many potential customers/families and it suddenly didn't make economic sense to expand down here.
I say that is total BUNK and they could scoop it up now and have it all and make a lot of people happier than if we've no choice but shopping for waxy pesticides that look and feel alot like fresh produce at the new tiftonia walmart.
i'm serious people - don't buy your produce at wally world. i bought cilantro at a walmart once and it stayed fresh for three weeks!

I mostly used the Winn-Dixie to buy the New York Times and cigarettes. If somebody else will start selling the Times, I'll be OK.
