I'd Like to Thank My Three Sisters

So my little "blogging lecture" thingie at UTC this afternoon ended up a little differently than I expected. Instead of oh, a college summer class on new media, it ended up being a Girls Inc. summer program on journalism. A dozen girls 14-18.

First off I'd like to thank my three sisters: Abbie, Esther, and Joanna for providing me with the requisite experience necessary to navigate the whole thing.

Secondly I'd like to say that their level of knowledge of the internet was mind-blowing. One girl had three blogs. What the heck? Some of them could type as fast as me.

Thirdly, the contrast between recent GA Blogging events and suddenly teenage girls blogging was such as to 'cause my brain to short-circuit. What to do about the New Perspective folks and the Mississippi Valley Presbytery's recent overture to GA vs. is Jesse McCartney hotter than Aaron Carter. These might seem like two disperate issues but the relation is there, I assure you.

Fourthly, teenage girls are clearly pack oriented. Their ability to "descend vociferously upon" should 'cause us deep fear and we should thank MTV and the United States unversity system for teaching them good old fashion American in-fighting. Otherwise we'd all be in a great deal of trouble. Their attentions would turn on a dime, one moment lambasting Bill on his blog the next on to arguing as a group mind you with Bailes & Ryan on The Daily Bailout. I believe even Andy's niece Niamh became subject of their interest.

I had a 15 year-old girl call me at work today. She wanted to know if I would join the Josiah Roe Fan Club. She giggled a lot and was really persuasive, so I said yes and wrote down the address where I could send the check or money order. Apparently my $35 gets me a poster and a backstage pass. Money well spent my friends, money well spent.

We've been working with the folks at Girls, Inc. for a few months now - nice group and great kids. We held a few classes on basic design a one on simple HTML principles. The kids (ages 10-15) were great students and gave me new hope for our local schools.

Glad you had a chance to meet some of them.

From my observations, while it is assumed that only teenage boys are technologically savvy (video gaming and all), teenage girls are about as technologically savvy as their male counterparts, they're just use the technology to different ends.

By the way Josiah, when is tampabayblogs going to go live? Political season is starting to heat up, this would be a great opportunity to start recruiting candidates to blog.
