Changes to Chattablogs
OK, Huffine and I worked up some changes to the chattablogs mainpage. From now on new entries will like to the individual entry archives, while the blog title will just link to the particular blog's mainpage.
Also, up top in place of the "news" section is a recent comments for the entire chattablogs domain, which I think is a pretty cool way to pop in on conversations happening on the various blogs.
Anyways, let me know what you think.

Kinda errie, I'll give it a go for a while. Thanks for thinking of us.

Hey, why are you home? Go have fun - it's your anniversary.

I really don't like it personally, I rather have people visit my main page not the individual entries, however my entries all link to my main page anyways so I guess it doesn't matter.

you should probally strip comments of there HTML tags on the main page recent comments thing.

good idea and I can see the reason behind it, but I agree with James. I'd rather send people to the home page for one-stop shopping.
and I'm not keen on the magenta either, but I guess I'd hafta take that up with Mark?
either way, thanks for all the hard work. yall rock and stuff.

Just a couple of things:
1) You should find some way of indicating which comment is on which blog, so people have at least some inkling of what's happening.
2) I'm with bob on this one: the magenta is not a happy thing.

I like the somewhat chaotic nature of leaping headlong into a discussion via the new recent comments thingie. My conceit behind it is that over a certain amount of time people will become familiar with various individuals on the site and it isn't so much where something was said but who said it. Of course, I may end up hating it and will change it.
In terms of the magenta: need I remind you that there are those qualified for mediating "cool", particularly as it comes to such inherently hip-potent things as "design". When Mark says X, it's close to gospel. When Mark & Paul Rustand speak in unison, it's the almighty voice of the visual arts gods and I'd be an impotent wretch nay, an apostate in need of mercy at the highest order were I to disagree.

yeah, but come on...it's PINK. I mean, I was trying to be nice by calling it magenta, with the whole cyan/magenta logo (which is indeed cool), but on the text links, it's just dang pink. oh well. if the gods have spoken, what can be done?

Josiah, don't sell yourself (or the rest of us humans) short. You wouldn't be a "wretch nay" for having an opinion - we earthlings still have a say. As for becoming impotent, I didn't know Mark and Paul had those powers, so I might take pause.
That said, the colors are cool - but I think they'll take some getting used to. The UI's in a state of evolution - but straightforward. The whole medium of this type of blog portal is still in flux - I won't be too quick to condemn experimental navigation and features.
The linking straight to the archive is a clever way of getting around the "visited link" problem. It may just force us all to pay attention to how our archive page looks and behaves.

The Pulse Blog's archive page is a hideous mess -- but I like the changes. I even rather dig the magenta. It reminds me of Miami. I like Miami.
Posted by: mesh at May 12, 2005 11:39 AM
Miami is nice. I miss Miami. I barely know you Mesh, but let's plan a road trip.
Posted by: StelmoDad at May 12, 2005 11:41 AM
Josiah, what about full content on the rss feeds? I download all the blog entries on my offline reader, but most blogs default to the "blurb" status, I guess, so I only get a few sentences and then have to find a place to go online if I want the rest. A few, like Maphet, don't blurb at all so I get the full content. And that is very nice.

I'm not sure who you are, but you like Miami. So you're fine in my book, and a road trip sounds great.

"...over a certain amount of time people will become familiar with various individuals on the site..."
Oh, this is funny.

nice improvement with the addition of the link to the blog. for some reason the URL to my entry is leaving out a /
hmmm...

Joe,
It is possible to change the default status in the index for new bloggers but there is really no sensible way to change it for all bloggers, and I'm not sure that we want to start making global template changes on existing blogs.
If anyone wants to be kind and change there own template it is very easy. Just check out your RSS Index template(s) and change <$MTEntryExcerpt encode_xml="1"$> to something like this: <$MTEntryBody encode_xml="1"$> <MTEntryIfExtended>
<br/><a href="<$MTEntryPermalink$>#more">Continue reading "<$MTEntryTitle$>"</a> </MTEntryIfExtended>
That should all go between the <description> </description> tags in the RSS template.
I'm a big rss reader user myself and I agree that it is always nice to have the full text in the description rather than just a blurb. It is kind of annoying to have to click the link to visit the page just to read the rest of the post when it could all be in the description that was downloaded. Oh well, maybe this will inspire people to change it.

Bob,
Your problem should be fixed now.
Posted by: bhuffine at May 12, 2005 1:24 PM
indeed. thanks.

I'm okay with the magenta and I really like the cellophane overlay effect. My suggestion would be to use more width (maybe even allow it to just go 100%). You could fit a lot more on the page. Of course, since I don't have to do any of the work, I'll gladly contribute difficult suggestions that I don't have to impliment (let's make sure it handles foreign character sets and right to left reading as well.)

On second thought, ditch the comments on the main page. Now all we get to see is the asinine comments left by semi-literate ingrates about the 2003 "Ghetto Prom" post.
