The Sox

I'm physically exhausted. The last two games have drained me so much emotionally that it hurts to lift my arms. My eyeballs feel like they're going to explode. I can barely think about work, but damnit, all I want to do is think about work because the ugly demons of rationality insist its not possible; that tonight Schilling, hell-bent to be a hero, will fail like his torn and twisted ankle. That somehow, Rivera under the bright lights in the Capitol of the Evil Empire will once again become superhuman; automatic; this godforsaken Panamanian slayer of dreams.

But I want to believe. I want to see history made. I want to say to my kid 15 years from now, "I remember when the Red Sox did what no other team ever did." I want my '68 Tigers. I'll settle for the Sox in 7.

Josiah, you better watch out, you're coming awfully close to the sort of language that will jinx your team (if all of the "I Believe" signs in the stands haven't already done it).

Kathryn, this is the Red Sox we're talking about, remember? We're already jinxed. Times 86. Nothing we say will change that. We can only fight on. I don't believe. I rage.

I think Jeter is gay.

Posted by: Bill at October 19, 2004 2:02 PM

Gay-rod Bill? What are you saying?

Posted by: JosiahQ at October 19, 2004 2:29 PM

Him too. I think it'll be a 26-inning game tonight...
And it'll end up with Jason Giambi giving up an inside the park home run to Derek Lowe...cuz that's all who'll be left to put in for either team...

Mesh, I would argue that the reason that the Sox are jinxed is because every year everyone does a whole "we believe" thing. In other words, it started out as an ordinary World Series drought, but then when people started saying that they were cursed, that brought in the factor of people saying "we believe" and doing all of the things that are proven to jinx series.

We're such bad fans, rooting and all.

Posted by: mesh at October 20, 2004 11:07 AM

Mesh, I've said it a million times, don't let it bother you; I have no idea why Kathryn talks about sports, like a small child wandering into a dark theater, having no frame of reference.

Posted by: JosiahQ at October 20, 2004 11:21 AM

Mesh and Roe, rooting is perfectly fine, but when you go off on the "I believe" line, what you are saying is that "I know my team sucks and that they don't have much of a chance, but I believe anyway." It's along the line of fans chanting "we want the Cup" in the second period of a hockey game--it's a sure fire way to jinx your team.

And Roe, you talk about having no frame of reference, but you're growing a playoff beard for baseball! Maybe if you had done it right and shown proper fandom for the Red Wings, and grew a playoff beard with the right sport, your Presidents Trophy winning team wouldn't have been bounced out of the playoffs by a #6 seed.

just stop talking, you're far more intelligent and compelling when you're talking about politics. you're completely out of your element. seriously.

Posted by: JosiahQ at October 20, 2004 1:50 PM

"I believe" in the Red Sox AND God. Will that jinx them both?

Posted by: paul at October 20, 2004 2:00 PM

I've realized something about this conversation: I don't care. I don't believe in jinxes any more than curses, I'm excited about my team, I hope in them, I love them. If that's "jinx" language, well, who gives a rip? I BELIEVE I BELIEVE I BELIEVE. There. That should complete the jinx. Now will you go away?

Posted by: mesh at October 20, 2004 2:31 PM

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I'm not really superstitious, you all need to not get so uptight. The reason they can't win is psychological, and managing to win in game 4 when they were down and the crowd was out of it should help in the mental side of the game.,
