Lance Armstrong Nike Commercial

I've been trying to find the Lance Armstrong NIKE commercial for download for the past couple weeks. I finally did, so I posted it here for you to enjoy.

I've gotten quite fascinated in the last year or so with television commercials and music videos. Mesh and I have been talking for awhile now about purchasing our own video camera to start practicing. Its not that I want to make televisions commercials per se, but I'm fascinated at the unbelievable amounts of time and money spent developing a 90 second piece intended to move the viewer to, well, buy something.

The Lance Armstrong commercial downright moved me. I wanted to run outside jump on a bike, and just ride like I did when I was a little kid. Not only that, but it made me want to ride in America, through California, up highway 101, across the Great Plains, and it made me want to give all my money to children's cancer research. It's been a long time, a long long time since I've been affected that why by a commercial. Most just make me laugh, this one made me want to cry.

My idea, (or it might have been Mesh and mine, sometimes I just don't know who thinks what first), is to do a series of promotional videos for our friends. The idea being to, quite literally, sell the viewer on your friend; to both capture the emotional/phenomenological experience of your friend and to induce the viewer to really want to partake in said friend.

I know it might seem like a disgusting combination of consumerist mass-media with the essence of authenticity, but I think there's the possibility of doing something really interesting, perhaps even moving. I mean, if entire poems can be written about one person, why not do a visual one?

So um, anybody out there with some film equipment interested in doing something like this, let me know.

The Lance Armstrong video is named "Magnet" and it was directed by Jake Scott, and was done by Wieden & Kennedy. You can read some great stuff about the ad here

The best work in video/film, period, being done these days is being done in commercials.

I would like to help with the aforementioned projects.

I still have a dream of making the 1/8th Mile music video starring p-nut and booty. It could happen one day...

That and the Zach Todd rendition of the Baywatch intro.

Posted by: steele at July 7, 2004 2:41 PM

why isnt there a tour de america anyway?

Posted by: bobw at July 7, 2004 2:41 PM

Your idea is pure brilliance. It might smack of consumerist mass-media but, as my boss says, we are products of a post-modern generation. In high school my Spanish class made a propoganda/Spanish/comedy video that captured a little bit of the essence of the participants' personalities. We kept the project a secret, plastered the school with "Los Diarios de Dr. Suave" propoganda posters, and in the end held a school-wide screening. Again, brilliance... and loads of fun and laughter.

Oh, and that Nike commercial is one more reason why I want to race the MS150 next summer... aside from my aunt having MS.

Posted by: josh at July 8, 2004 8:05 PM

The reason that Nike commercial is so compelling is because we know the story behind it, the triumph of a man over a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. The commercial is aesthetically appealing, but draws all its pathos from real life.
Or so I think.

Ok we love the commercial more than anything we have done since childhood, but how can we get our hands on a copy of the song written just for this clip~~~~!!! Anyone have any ideas...I called Mark Tobin with the production company...but I NEED MORE OF THIS MUSIC>someone help me!!!

Posted by: Peter at July 13, 2004 9:51 PM

Yeah, that Lance commercial is cool. I felt exactly like you. I felt like I wanted to just get on my bike and ride and ride, and just take a vacation and ride across the nation literally.

Posted by: Jon at July 14, 2004 12:51 AM

it would be better if you had this up so we could download the song and keep it for ourselves. I love this song and i want to have it.....

Posted by: grace at July 16, 2004 8:04 PM

i found your info by searching "nike commercial lance armstrong"
i did not expect to find others so touched by this ad. amazing.
i wanted to find the music... i thought the riders in my spin class would get a kick out of riding to this!
while spinning... i AM lance!

Posted by: karen at July 20, 2004 9:50 PM

Definitely the best commercial I've seen. Cant explain the feeling I get whenever I watch this. So inspiring in a very simple way.

Posted by: Vincent at July 23, 2004 3:11 AM

i too felt the pure inspiration by Lances commercial and appreciate the one who made it possiable to download. Do you know who the song is by?

Posted by: hailstorm at July 23, 2004 4:30 PM

I want to find out what that song on the lance nike commercial is called. Does anyone know or can anyone help me find it out?

Posted by: derek at July 23, 2004 5:55 PM

It seems that many are moved by this commercial. I speculate it is a wonderful combination of the romantic dream of conquering mortality, manifested in a great bike ride, through all conditions with the many changing faces in our lives. The music is compelling-like a locomotive, but very subtle. This spurs me to action.

Let's face it, if life were this cool all of the time, there would be no need for prozac.

Good for you, Nike, on creating an inspiring vision.

Posted by: John at July 23, 2004 6:32 PM

It looks as though the music is a one-off made specifically for the commercial and is not available for purchase.

You may be able to find (over the Internet, of course) someone who extracted the audio from the commercial and made an .mp3.

Posted by: addison at July 24, 2004 10:25 AM

well, i have found the video online. i am sure i can extract the audio from the video to make an mp3 if anyone was interested.

Posted by: chap at July 24, 2004 2:50 PM

i totally know what you mean.. i watch this clip and feel that tingly sensation.. amazing.. i would be interested in an mp3 :D

Posted by: selcouth at July 24, 2004 3:49 PM

I am amazed at how many people found this page looking for the music to that commercial. It is one of my favorite commercials of all time. But yeah, does anyone have an extracted song yet?????

Posted by: Mastheadmike at July 24, 2004 4:50 PM

Actually, I believe the song in the commercial is Everloving by Moby. It is on his Play album.

Posted by: keegan at July 24, 2004 6:21 PM

Well, I just read that the song is an original composition for the commercial...but check out the Moby song and see what you think.

Posted by: keegan at July 24, 2004 6:35 PM

i'm downloading everloving right now to see if it's the same song or just similar....that's kool that so many people took enough time to actually sift through all the stuff and find this site. This is definitely my favorite commercial, seconded by reboks office linebacker commercials....ok, download is complete. it sounds similar to me. maybe they got the song idea from Everloving by Moby, but i don't think that it's close enough to be called the same song. i guess they did make an origonal for the commercial.

Posted by: David at July 24, 2004 7:02 PM

I ripped the song in mp3 if you want it. It, of course, still has the background noise though it may help you assuage the yearning for a full version. You can find it at:

If you really want to see something amazing then have the creators of the song/commercial make it available to the public for $1.00 per download and give the money to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Not only would the foundation benfit greatly but the song would definitely go to No. 1, right along side of Lance himself.

I REALLY hoped to find a copy of Nike's incredibly moving commercial and was lucky enough to locate it on your site.
Thanks a million for tracking it down and making it available.

I think the reason that commercial is so good is because they made some voodoo or something. I bet if you play it backwards you will hear this deep gruntled voice demanding you to go out and ride your bike.

Nobody believes me, but it's true. A friend told me he knows this person who tested it.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I was delighted to find that you posted this link to this television commercial. My wife, my teenage daughter and I have enjoyed watching most of this year's Le Tour de France together. Indeed, we think Lance Armstrong is an extraordinary example of dedication, perseverance, honor, humility, and triumph, by a sports superstar. It is refreshing to see such exceptional character among today's world of primadonna, egotistical, overpaid sports superstars. We have even enjoyed all the Lance Armstrong television commercials, especially this particular Nike one, which will always be a nostalgic reminder to us of this special time together watching Lance Armstrong winning this years Le Tour de France. By the way, I was able to download it to my computer by right clicking on it as it was playing, which then gave me the option to download it. P.S. Please read my personal testimony on our website www.trumpetoftruth.com (mine is Bruce K.) Thank you.

Posted by: goose at July 26, 2004 4:38 AM

Hello again. By the way, does anyone have any more links to watch (and perhaps be able to download) any other Lance Armstron television ads? I would like to find the USPS ad which shows Lance and his USPS teammates riding around the city delivering mail (the one which ends with Lance saying, "tomorrow"?!)

Posted by: goose at July 26, 2004 5:18 AM

i dont know what it is about the commercial and i wont even try to explain it, but it just shows we can overcome great odds and keep riding the next day

Posted by: matthew at July 26, 2004 11:32 AM

I'm amazed that that this commercial has moved so many people the same way it has moved me. So many of you are looking to find who sang in the commercial, it was Kathy Fisher of "Fisher The Band". Unfortunately the song was developed only for the 90sec. commercial, but there is talk of producing an entire song for a benefit CD.

I am also looking for the song from this ad! I tried going to the link provided in a previous posting to get the mp3 but it said the site was no longer available.

I have also been desperately looking for the Nike hat worn by Robin Williams and Lance's step dad yesterday. It was black with a yellow "6" on it. Anyone have any info on this ? I have looked at nike.com, trekbikes.com and wearyellow.com.

Posted by: matthew at July 26, 2004 1:57 PM

Here is some additional info on the song that I found. Hope this helps someone in tracking it down.

The spot’s music, composed by Dave Wittman and Jimmy Haun at Elias Arts Los Angeles with support from creative director David Gold and head of production Dayna Turcotte, features the vocal talents of Kathleen Fisher. The sound was designed by creative director Dane Davis and Eddie Kim at 740 Sound/Danetracks with help from producer Scott Ganary, and Jeff Payne at Eleven Sound Studios in Santa Monica mixed the final audio.

I got this reply about getting a copy of the song in the Lance/Nike ad from Elias Sound Design, the company that created the song:

"Thanks we appreciate your comments. Our composer Dave Wittman is really happy that we are getting many request for his music. You may go to Nike.com and download Nike "magnet" for a fee ? And all proceeds will got
to charity.
Thanks again"

I checked nike.com though and found nothing. Anyone else find what Elias is talking about?

Posted by: duke126 at July 26, 2004 3:13 PM

He may have been talking about viewing the 90-second version of the commercial (for free, that is) at nikecycling.com. Dunno, but if you like Kathy Fisher's vocals, check out I Will Love You by Fisher the Band.

This commercial is truly different than all other ads I have ever seen. An ad is usually an attempt to persuade, to tempt, or to win the consumer's gratitude for a product. To see this compelling commercial was like a breath of fresh air, because they aren't trying to sell anything, or shove some product or message in your face, it simply captures the essence of triumph and steadfast willpower of a man who has conquered all odds, who had less than a 50% chance of living with testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain. The story of Lance Armstrong is so inspirational and that commercial truly captures how strong he is, and how strong we all can be. Thanks to all who made this spectacular ad, it is truly inspiring, to go out there and follow your dreams!
P.S. For everyone out there who wants to support Lance and his foundation for cancer survivors, you can show your support by wearing the yellow wristband that spells out "LIVESTRONG."
100% of the profit goes to the Lance Armstrong Foundation ( they are $1 each)
These are great because they are a visual reminder to us to LIVE STRONG whether that means to ignore that cheeseburger or chocolate cookie, to live our lives with a strong and positive outlook, and to get out there and pursue whatever it is that moves you!
congradulations to Lance for number 6!!
ROCK ON LANCE

Hi.
I do not want to discourage you in anyway, but you need to know something. To whimsically say that you are going to go make commercials like this one really belittles the artistic integrity involved in their creation. People based their entire lives around mastery of the talents and skills involved in advertisements like "Magnet." Even the musicians who wrote the score to that commercial have devoted their lives to their craft. No offense is meant by this at all, but don't underestimate the skills that the creators of this ad retain. Even though you act like mass media is evil, were you not moved by this ad? Just because you don't buy the nike product, doesnt mean the ad is ineffective on you. A new trend in adverrtisement is to transcend basic consumerism and to sell ideas and lifestyles. They make it seem so easy, don't they? So, with that said, go empower yourself with the skill and dedication needed to make commercials like these, but don't forget that "...nothing comes easy. It takes much practice.." and talent, and dedication, and...

Tha smartest thing you can say is that you know nothing.

I too would like this music, I wanted to listen to it in france when I watched the Tour, but couldn't find it. I want to get it.

Posted by: Kevin at August 1, 2004 10:07 PM

This commerical got my attention before, during, and after the Tour De France. I believe that it is truly the song that draws people in, combined with Lance's story. The song was the first thing that caught my attention. Often i would sit in the other room on the computer while listening to the tour. I believe it is the building of the song, and its ambient sound. I carried this song around in my head for 3 weeks from the time I first heard it.

Posted by: Dan at August 3, 2004 9:30 PM

Do you know who did the song for that armstrong commerical?

Posted by: Brittany at August 7, 2004 12:38 AM

Just when I was about to give up searching for this inspirational video - BANG!!!!! - I then find it here. This is probably the best footage I've seen thus far, even better than the video where LA's riding through the woods, dropping his companion riders as he's known to do.

I look forward to the next commercial which should reflect LA's 6 wins and possibly 7 should he maintain his health and focus in '05.

Posted by: JRAL at August 8, 2004 8:35 PM

At the very end of the video, we see a boy on a bike riding along the road, legs pedaling furiously.

The press release says that Lance's "attractive force helps a young boy on his BMX close the gap between them."

I'm pretty sure the director of the video intended us to see the little boy as a young Lance on his first ever bike, a Schwinn Mag Scrambler, pedaling furiously along the road.

When Lance looks over his shoulder at the end of the video, he is looking back at himself, he is looking at himself as a young boy. It's a beautiful scene.

Posted by: Bobby at August 9, 2004 4:19 PM

Being a Lance fan, Cancer survivor and a Canadian, I was utterly stuned when I first saw the commercial. I could not believe a multinational corporate ape like Nike was capable or even willing to make such a beautiful non-statement.
Just simply liveSTRONG !
and the little guy at the end "young Lance" i believe was drafting of his back tire. Hence the adds official name "Magnet".

For anyone looking for the commercial and the song go here. http://www.darnellworks.com/a52/nr0068.htm
The song is not availble for purchase. If you have quicktime pro you can save the movie to your desktop. If you have a mac you most certainly have imovie. Import the quicktime movie into imove. Drag the movie into the timeline. Go to "advanced" at the top and select audio extract. Delete the actual video track. Go to file share, export the movie to quicktime. Pick your quality. Now open garageband. Import the file into garage band. Save the file in garageband, then export the music to itunes. It takes a few minutes for the whole process but if you love that music it is well worth it. Your may try importing the quicktime movie right into garageband. I haven't tried that, it may work. Hope this helps.

I have tried both links, and the one at the top of this page in red "Lance Armstrong Nike commercial for download" is easier,
and it gives you the full screen quality .mov. Just right click on link, and "save link as". Works out to just over 10 MBs.

Why is the boy at the end of the commercial wearing a football helmet and his shoulderpads on the handlebars? Did Lace play football as a kid but found his true calling in cycling?

Posted by: Earl at August 20, 2004 10:35 PM

I rode 40 miles for the Lance Armstrong Foundation in DC last year (http://www.tourofhope.com) and I can identify with a fraction of that commercial; while training, I rode in the rain, through city streets, up every hill I could find, battled a flu and stomach ailments, etc. I faced only a small percentage of the pain he has endured on and off the bike and seeing this commercial is truly inspiring.

Another thing about Nike is that they stuck by Lance when it looked like he might never race again. His French sponsors, Confidis, on the other hand, dropped him while he was undergoing treatment. So I think Nike deserves a residual from Lance's success. In fact, Lance mentioned that he made an unprecedented break in his training schedule to do this commercial because Nike is a special sponsor to him.

Posted by: JungleCat at August 21, 2004 2:04 AM

Oh and Earl, Lance tried football but said he had trouble with the lateral movement required. Not sure about the kid with the helmet though.

Posted by: JungleCat at August 21, 2004 2:06 AM

Regarding extracting and converting the music from the Magnet commercial; here is the procedure I followed. After downloading the mov file I opened iTunes and drug the file into my music library. Next I ctrl-clicked (right clicked for Windows users) the file and selected "Convert Selection to mp3" this option will depend on your current importing preferences in iTunes, for example the option may be "Convert Selection to AAC."

It was as simple as that, iTunes stripped the video and converted the file to a 192 Kbps mp3. It even uses the first frame of video as the album cover. Selecting the "Get Info" option will allow the title, artist and album options to be changed, as well is allowing you to select at which second the mp3 will begin playing. I have mine set to :02 to omit the 'beep' in the beginning.

Hope this info helps! I went through this process last night after finding this site... I agree with everyone this commercial is truly amazing! I'm not 100% sure how different the procedures listed above would be using the Windows version of iTunes, but I'm sure it would work roughly the same.

I too have been searching to read about this commercial, and am glad that I am not the only one who values it. Top flight, great work, phenomenal melding of commercial and aesthetic sense. Have been looking at notable commercials elsewhere at http://www.joeytomatoes.com/housereels.htm , the highlight of which has been http://www.joeytomatoes.com/adidasthelongrun.htm . Apparently only appeared in the Netherlands, inexplicably? To see Cassius young again, that is truly powerful. The nondescript figures in the background apparently include Beckham and Gebresalassie. For the fans of the Armstrong commercial not so much into sports as scenery, the genius of the man's hand movements at the end will be lost--but for the those others, you will replay and replay to no end. Or perhaps I am the only one, but then this thread exists?

IRRESPONSIBLE SCORING
The word has it that the song used in this commercial was plagarized. The original song, sounding exactly like the one used in the commerical, was written almost three years ago by 2 local Los Angeles songwriters for a film. Elias got ahold of their movie reel and lifted the song. Elias says, "we have a problem here" and "go ahead take us to court."
