Blogging Server Mix-Up
As some of you probably noticed, oh around 3:30 pm yesterday Chattablogs and some of the other blogging server started acting a little goofy. Well, let me break it down for you:
1. We're up to over 200 blogs total now. We're getting millions of hits a month. Traffic is kinda crazy.
2. Movabletype is a massive Perl CGI, and when it starts up (everytime you make a comment or login to your blog, or click on any button inside your blog) it causes the server CPU usage to spike really high for a second. It's no big deal for 5 blogs, 20 blogs, or even 100 blogs. But 200 blogs. Well, it's starts to put a drain on things.
3. There were a couple of solutions to this ever-growing problem. We could *fix* movabletype's problem by compiling the perl code into binary, and thus decreasing the load or we could buy a new blazingly fast server to put all the blogging sites on.
4. We decided to do both. Lang went nuts yesterday and figured out how to compile MT into binary, and he also moved the blogging sites to another server EXCEPT their database, which still resides on the old server. So, if you notice a hesitation when you log into your blog, it's because it'll pulling your information from across the internet.
5. We still need to get a new server, dedicated to just the blogging sites. So, if you feel inclined to donate to help us make this happen, please do so at the bottom of the Chattablogs mainsite. We'd need between $2,000 & $3,000 to get the server that would pretty much have us set for a couple years & 10,000 blogs. So...that's all!

are you aware of the lack of www. dns or something? i.e. you can get to chattablogs.com/quintus but not www.chattablogs.com/quintus

Okay, let us know how the fundraising goes. You gonna use Paypal?
I am glad you posted this. It explains why I have been experiencing some of the bug I have. Downloaded pictures disappearing, comments popup not working yadayadayada.
Are you having a formal "blessing of the server" service?
