Tim Cleary, Covenant College alumni (and fellow ICS major), is accused of entering Harvest Baptist Church of Orlando, Florida during a funeral & attacking the body inside of the display casket.

Aaron Mesh, who attended Covenant College at the same time as Tim Cleary and was involved in an altercation with Mr. Cleary over appropriate indoor-soccer victory celebrations, stated, "I'm sorry to hear it, but relieved to no longer be the most defenseless person Tim Cleary has punched."

Andrew Stewart, who had his collarbone broken by Mr. Cleary when Mr. Stewart refused to share his bowl microwave pasta while the two were participating in a Semester Abroad program in Slovakia said: "When a man will break your collarbone over a package of tortellini, I guess anything can happen. I can tell you, the tortellini is not worth it."

"It's just kind of one of those 'what does it all mean' things," said Stewart.

Heard about this yesterday. Laughed my ass off.

Is this for real!?! Is it April Fools?..no, it's November...Josiah, how the heck did you find out about this?!

(Sadly...) this is such classic Tim......he sure has run the gammit of those he choses to pick on and randomly latch onto....Gotta admit, I laughed, then realized, I've been expecting something like this for many years now. Hmmm.

that guy has reached a mythic status over here on our team by which we judge all other messed up covenant students who study abroad. and while this is very, very disturbing, i'm with janelle that this is not too surprising.

I laughed at first but after reading a google message group that apparently his brother got on kind of felt bad for laughing.

What I gathered from the message group is that Tim has officially been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, which was not that suprising. Apparently his family suffers from it, the man in the casket was a realtive, uncle or grandfather?? not sure. Anyway the man passed away with extreme depression and guilt for having passed on this burden of bi-polar disorder (didn't know it was genetic but makes sense).

And my guess is Tim was ticked off that this relative 'gave' him bi-polar?? That would be my assumption, blaming that relative for the disorder.

Whatever the reasons are its a sad story and one that I think as Christians we should not laugh at. Its hard not to, but the thing that I think we all need to realize is this is a man who is in desperate need of prayer. Especially if he is bi-polar as that is a disease/disorder that can truly run your life into the ground.

Not trying to be the pious Pete or the ned flanders of the bunch, or the high horse harry, just saying this is kind of a sad moment and Tim is a member of the covenant college family, and potentially the covenant family as well who is struggling and in need of prayer.

Tim has a diagnosied mental illness. I'd cut him some slack and hold back on the mocking.

Any mocking is out of line, imo. The situation is sad, but it's also tragically funny.

Holton,

I found the same posting and wanted to point out that it is slightly different, perhaps even more unfortunate. Apparently the attack happened Saturday (Nov. 3), while the posting was today (Nov. 7), referring to the death of Tim's father on Monday. I can only assume that the Monday was the one just passed, Nov. 5., after Tim was arrested. Plus, the girlfriend brought him to the funeral, which makes it seem that it wasn't an immediate relative.

In other words, it appears as tho Tim's having to deal with an arrest and the death of his father AND with the possible guilt of feeling that he may have contributed to his father's death.

Ok, I actually heard from my friend (Jason Bintz) today who read the police report that the person in the coffin was an 18 year old murder victim. Jason was actually reading the police report to me word for word over the phone. Dont know how he got a hold of it, but apparently thats who was in the casket, just for clarification. I cannot even begin to speculate on what they means to the situation.

Here is more info: The funeral was for Zeric Harrison, an African-American 18 year old who was murdered outside a club. Cleary wasn't "beating up" the corpse, but putting his hands on his face repeating "in Jesus' name." I suspect he was upset about the death, not at Zeric. Tim's girlfriend is also black, who might have a close connection to Zeric.

Josie, thanks for mocking, but not mocking Tim.

If you've followed Tim's blog ramblings on MySpace for any time at all, none of this is surprising. I hope he gets the help he clearly needs.

wow. i was SO unaware of all that went on in Slovakia! Andrew, how on earth did i miss the fact that it was Tim who broke your collar bone? crazy. my heart does go out to Tim. whether it was his father, cousin or some random guy named Jason or Zeric. i pray he gets the help and support he needs!

Posted by: katiemaloney at November 12, 2007 03:24 PM

Wow. He was one of the first people I met when I got to Covenant. He was literally one of only 2 people already on my hall when I moved in for the first time. That whole time, I considered him a friend, though obviously the indoor soccer night put a strain on things (I was on the Catacombs team).

I never thought he had a mental disorder. If I noticed anything it was just that he seemed easily excitable. If you look back with a critical eye though, it seems we Belzians did include a rather large proportion of the unbalanced population at Covenant.

He's a nice person. I hope he gets help.

What the heck is this comment above? Is this supposed to be something Tim once wrote or just some random guy who likes creating insane and rambling manifestos and posting them as comments on blogs?
