Best Album Endings
It had been awhile, so I decided to work through all The Beatles albums (well, the major releases). I'm hard pressed to find an album that finishes better than the Abbey Road "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End".
Does an album's "finish" need to include more than one song to show some kind of conclusion?
Other "finishes" I like, off the top of my head:
The end to Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan, "Shelter From the Storm" to "Buckets of Rain"
The end to Galore by The Cure, "Gone!" and "Wrong Number"
(this one is a sentimental bit) August & Everything After by Counting Crows, "Raining in Baltimore" and "A Murder of One", Wilco's YHF,
David Byrne's Feelings, Johnny Cash's At Folsom Prison, Death Cab's Transatlanticism, Elliot Smith's XO, Zeppelin 4, Mountain Goat's Sunset Tree.
Mebbe more later.

Man, we both must be having slow work days.

I always thought the end of Abbey Road was frustrating, because I always wanted the songs to be longer.

I'll actually agree with the above comment. They played those three songs in succession this morning on the "classic rock" station, and as awesome as those three are, they should be longer.

My favorite tid bit about that album ending is the part where George, John and Paul start trading guitar solos. If you don't pay attention you think its the same guitarist the whole time but once someone points it out to you its impossible not to notice.
The best part (and I can't remember the order off the top of my head) is that you hear the personalities of each Beatle in the guitar solos. I think it goes to each of them twice- something like Paul then George then John then Paul then George then John.
Listen for it.
Other great album endings- Radiohead Kid A, and my favorite of all time is Silver Jews Bright Flight with the song "Death Of An Heir Of Sorrows" and the lyrics-
We'd never been promised there will be a tomorrow- So let's just call it the death of an heir of sorrows
Makes me cry.

All good choices. Off the top of my head, I'd also nominate:
1. To keep the Beatles theame going, "A Day in the Life" on the Sgt. Pepper album.
2. "Won't Get Fooled Again"' on Who's Next.
3. "Good Night" White Album
4. "Rock and Roll Suicide" Ziggy Stardust
5. "Whipping Post" Allman Bros First Album
