East Chattanooga
One of the great things about having a scooter is that it encourages you to travel while somewhat limiting the reasonable range in which you can travel. The result is that you (or at least April and I) tend to explore/travel in a much more thorough and denser-ish fashion through neighborhoods and areas close to home.
One area in town I've come to find really enjoyable for its scenery, complexity, and even "potential" is that of East Chattanooga, in particular the intersection of Glass Street and Chamberlain Street.
People who live out in Gaylon Heights, out Bonny Oaks and out into Lake Hills and Murray Hills know Bonny Oaks to Campbell to Glass Street as one of the most (if not the most) direct route into the downtown area. I've driven the area a few times during rush hour, and the light/turn where Campbell meets Glass (and folks come down off the north end of Missionary Ridge) is quite congested. I'd be interested to know if there are any plans for Highway 17 (Campbell & Glass) to improve that intersection.
As drivers come over the Ridge and down Glass Street towards the intersection with Chamberlain, you're presented with a more built up and commercial/urban grouping of buildings. Some seem abandoned or others boarded up. The potential I feel is clear.
I don't know much about the history of that area (though names like Wheeler and Crutchfield imply something about the people involved, maybe), and I'd love to find out more. If anyone knows anything, please don't hesitate to pass it along.

The Glass Street commercial corridor has been included in at least two land use plans in the last two years, and I think was also the target of a more specific redevelopment plan in 2002. I'd have to check on that, but feel free to contact me if you'd like more information.
