So About That Karl Rove Coptix Photo Thing...
So I'm sure by now folks have seen this, or similar posts on a number of other blogs featuring the same image.
And others have probably seen (or will soon see) today's edition of The Times Free Press. The story you want is here. (my apologies for all the "uh's" in the audio clip).
The explanation you want for everything is in a guest blog post I wrote for the TFP, here.
Ron Ott was the genius behind the photoshopped Rove photo w/ the Coptix folder/logo, and David Gidcumb was generous enough to let us replace the original photo with our edited version. After that, a few strategically targeted comments, and the thing was off like comedic internet meme wildfire.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, Karl Rove is OUR underling, not the other way around. We just loaned him to GWB for the last few years, and he's got a lot of explaining to do when he gets back.
That said, we apologize if we contributed in any way to this.
The kicker about this whole thing is: one phone call could have answered & explained everything. Oh, and Coptix is not an "anonymous e-mail provider".
Damon went and made a funny ad.

Really, Josiah? You're going to pretend Wonkette is some serious politics site? You're going to pretend to be immune to the Double Secret Irony ... and of my own comments to your site this week?
You're going to pretend we didn't post the Sleestak thing yesterday, long before the reporter who talked to us got his story posted?
Really?
Aren't geeks supposed to be clever?
I guess you are probably clever for Chattanooga. But it you can't figure out a site that claims Dick Cheney is a time-traveling vengeance demon who can materialize at will in any bushes, I guess you're probably best off freaking out the squares at your local daily paper or whatever.

Oooo. Looks like somebody's feelings got hurt.
In all fairness, the original Wonkette post did betray some degree of skepticism, but most of the moonbats took the bait hook, line, and sinker.

Honestly, I could have turned out the -optix image with my finite photoshop skills - but quite honestly the tv monitor touch was not only a great touch but done VERY well.
I love you all so much...

So you're still alive, Josiah? Did you just leave the rest of Coptix to be eaten by the Sleestak? That, my friend, is the real scandal and must be investigated.

Heh, awesome stuff Josiah. Saw the picture of one of the blogs I read. Glad to see you guys are doing well. ;)

Ha ha - that's brilliant marketing. Way better than the stupid Cartoon Network terror plot...
Posted by: Evan Donovan at April 4, 2007 10:53 AM
Yes, I posted to Wonkette to let them all know what idiots they are. I think half of them are saying that the idea of it being a joke is just a cover-up, and the other half are saying "we knew all along!" Like Mr. Layne, supra.
In any case, the name Coptix has now traveled all across this great land. Nice work, Roe and co.

Nice work. I hope Bush is happy posing with you.

that's a show from the 70s? i thought it looked like a basketball game. is there a real big pic of it i can examine?
it is pretty funny, though. wouldn't be surprised if you do land a new client or two. it's innovative and fun, which is what rockin' companies appreciate.

It's worth pointing out that even if Layne's assertion is correct, there are two problems here:
1) This is the internet. If you've got the data yesterday, you post it yesterday.
2) Even if they did realize they'd been had before this posting, that means they were still fooled for two days.
And we all know that the one thing blowhards can't stand is being made to look foolish.
A veritable coup.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Josiah, I always knew you were secretly a rabid right-wing nutjob!

I've been watching Wonkette closely on this. I've just posted about this on my blog at Wonkette Fumbles Fumble Recovery Over Faux Rove Photo?.

Well, they say I'm fat, stupid, and the most powerful man on the internet. lol. The money quote:
"I wish the blogosphere had not been marginalized by stupid Josiah Roe".
Posted by: Josiah at April 4, 2007 12:56 PM
fat and SASSY... wow... what a world.
Couple of questions for you:
When did you all secretly move St. Elmo up to Lookout Mountain?
How long has Jeff been running a secret massive version of Coptix?
Did Jeff conspire with the "Wingers" before or after his time with the Mennonites?
Does Alice know that she's been contributing to Rovian politics or is she a double agent?
Will Coptix be one of the ruling elder groups of the Rovian New World Order and if so, can I be your friend?

I think being insulted by a KosKid is perhaps the most exalted status one could hope for. they're also hoping that their own botched news story will be the beginning of the "White House downfall". Because getting caught with your pants down about a fake document helped them so much in 2004 *cough*.
What makes this even better than Rathergate was that in the former case the forgery was submitted to make the President look bad, and the moonbats bought it wholesale. Now a forgery was submitted to make the moonbats look bad, and they still fell for it.
Well, Josiah, you probably won't get invited to many MoveOn parties ever again, but somehow I don't see you viewing that as much of a loss.

For what it's worth, I'm a fairly left-leaning Democrat who thinks that in the great chain of being, Carl Rove is one rung below pond scum.
But I watched this unfold with great amusement and much chuckling. Thanks for making an otherwise dreary Holy Week a bit more fun!

Josiah,
Now that you've marginalized the blogosphere, what are we doing on your blog? I didn't know you had that kind of power. Frankly, all blogs seem empty to me now.
Posted by: Ed at April 4, 2007 01:34 PM

Did Ken Layne just try to out-Irresponsible-Journalism Irresponsible Journalism? Josiah, I thought you had trademarked that du jour move! Or, having marginalized the entire blogosphere, are you seeking challenges elsewhere?
Also, I whipped up a little post regarding the kerfluffle this morning on my transplanted blog.

I like to think that I have the best explanation for why I didn't get the joke-
I work in a record store with television sets propped up around the store just like the one in the picture. At night time when most of my coworkers go home, we go to the used DVD's section and find whatever pulpy TV shows we can find, often in the past we have spent the last three hours of our shift watching The Land Of The Lost. Until just a few minutes ago I didn't realize this was abnormal.
I've been sitting here reading all these arguments thinking "So what if it's Land of The Lost, I don't get it."

You, my friend, are a f***ing genius. I read about your Rove photo through "The Corner" and onto Michelle Malkin's site.
Bra-freakin-vo! I tip my hat to you!

I think Dynamite Hack said it best - "Don't call me apathetic, 'cuz I don't believe the hype. Everything that comes from you is a fake, or a lie. And it's okay that you wanna spend some time away from me. It's all about karma, alien invasions... shokras, and crystals and reincarnation...just let me leave the left behind.

It looks like they were so embarrassed that they decided to yank the story. Funny.

Pass the popcorn. It's Showtime, baby.
