The Closing of Hoppy's Last Resort & The Joy of the Neighborhood Bar
If you haven't already heard, Hoppy's Last Resort closed over the Holidays. Complete travesty. So last weekend, sans Hoppy's, Eric, Daniel, and myself made an exploratory excursion to the nearest bar/pub, T-Bones near Coker Tire between Finley & TVA. It was acceptable in all but two crucial areas: it's jukebox and location.
With the Hoppy's Heartbreak in the back of my mind, I've been floored at the number of local/neighborhood pubs here in Portland. Last night we hit the Nob Hill Bar & Grill a mere 8 blocks from Mesh's apartment. Cracker Jacks, another great bar, is right around the corner and my personal fav The Lompoc is only 4 blocks away and was the location of the many of my Flickr pics from this trip.
There simply needs to be a local watering hole in St. Elmo.

I think Coptix needs to start Pubtix in Hoppy's old location (or in the TBA building or something?).
and not that it's St. Elmo, but I hear there's going to be a pub or something similar going into the old Brass Register location.

Why'd it close? I liked it and it always seemed to have a good crowd.
Tbones is good, cheap tacos on teusday nights are actually really good... i realize Tacos from a place called t bones is crazy. I think its 10 cent tacos... or maybe a 1$... i can't recall. Beers cheap too.

All that smoke must have gotten to the owner and clouded his thinking.

I just heard Hoppy on Fred the Show saying that some fellas are in the process of buying all of his equipment and such and will be opening back up. Same location, same idea, more BBQ.

you know I love stelmo in all its glory (for it is where I am from) and I hope for all the residents that there comes a new place to hang, but I am also excited about my new neighborhood, jefferson heights, where there will be a watering hole right around the corner thanks to Terry Cannon and the Big Chill. But still rumors only...

that's so sad hoppy's closed! i'm glad to hear you and mesh are still haunting local pubs together, though, even if it is in another town. hi to mesh for me!

Don't underestimate the role cheap, lingering, non-tipping patrons played in the proprietor's ultimate decision to close.
