Through A Glass Darkly
Andy gave me this Harpers article by Jeff Sharlet a couple of weeks ago, and I put me in a bit of a funk given my general agreement with the thesis. The article basically defines "fundamentalist" to include everyone from Fundamentalist Baptists to Francis Schaeffer, Rushdooney, Tim LaHaye, and Doug Phillips & his The Vision Forum cronies; and then goes on to describe an ideological & cultural genealogy connecting those parties and others.
Ryan first posted about the article here, and Jeff Sharlet was kind enough to respond.
Like I said in my comment: my problem isn't with the thesis, it's that the genealogy is completely wrong.

i can't spar with the intellect-likes of you, but that was a VERY interesting dialogue between Sharlet and the boys on Ryan's site. I like to see you all conversing on his level, except with the intellectual honesty that only truth brings to a conversation... makes me proud.

Thanks, Tacy, but I wouldn't sell yourself short. You may not be into argument, but I can't imagine you being an intellectual slouch.
