My Top 25 Songs of 2006

I love end of year list time. I based most of this off my iTunes playcount for the last year, with some qualification.

My consumption of music has become virtually all about the "single". In fact, I'm not sure I listened to 25 new albums in their entirety all year, with a few exceptions (Bob Dylan, Adem, Sufjan, Cat Power, TV on the Radio, The Decemberists, Destroyer, The Thermals). In the era of iTunes, Pitchfork, and mp3 blogs you've got to hit me with a couple of singles for me to purchase your whole album.

Ranking these was all but impossible. I have no idea if they're the "best" (frankly, I don't care), but they're the ones I enjoyed / found the most interesting and unique over the last 12 months. I welcome your feedback.

One shout-out: you must get Ilando Gima Onge by Extra Golden. These guys are better than everyone.

The list:

1. Postcards from Italy - Beirut
2. Somethings Going To Come - Adem
3. Star of Wonder - Sufjan Stevens
4. Crazy - Gnarls Barkely
5. European Oils - Destroyer
6. Pinata - Enzo
7. The Greatest - Cat Power
8. My Love - Justin Timberlake
9. Wolf Like Me - TV On The Radio
10. Shankill Butchers - The Decemberists
11. Someday Baby - Bob Dylan
12. Hold On, Hold On - Neko Case
13. Flight 180 - Bishop Allen
14. Better in Manhattan - Casey Deinel
15. The Crystal Cat - Dan Deacon
16. Game of Pricks - A Sunny Day in Glasgow
17. Bulletproof - The Della Volley
18. Always For You - The Album Leaf
19. Green Grass of Toronto - First Person Shooter
20. You Can Never Hold Back Spring - Tom Waits
21. A Pillar of Salt - The Thermals
22. Well Thought Out Twinkles - Silversun Pickups
23. Ilando Gima Onge - Extra Golden
24. Hips Don't Lie - Shakira
25. Don't F**K With Love - The Sad Little Stars
