The Atrocity of Museum & Gallery Website Design

I fail to understand how organizations that will spend millions of dollars on fantastically designed exhibitions, buildings, and marketing materials can be satisfied with websites that aren't merely sub-par, but are utterly horrific.

Heck, the farcical Borat website has a better understand of its branding and business objectives than the average oh, British Museum website (please never, ever change page width within your website).

Glaser said "Art is Work", and there's no reason to think a website is any different.

I mean seriously, does the website for The Field Museum speak even one iota of (forgive the cliche') the grandeur of the museum itself? that feeling of being awestruck when you visit for the first time as a child? You're better off checking Flickr.

people seem to be afraid of good web design.
I have worked for clients who have seen my designs and claimed that they are to advanced for what they want user to feel from their site and we aren't talking big flash menus and stuff like that, just better design.

I does seem that many businesses, especially non-profits, are scared of clean design and well thought out navigation -- they just want all the content piled on their home page.
