How Do You Kill That Which Has No Life?
I realize my silence on the matter was no evidence at all of the fact that a little over a month ago I cancelled my World of Warcraft account. Do I miss it? Somewhat. I'd accomplished a good bit in the game, having visited (and cleared with a group of 40 people) a number of the "End Game" dungeons.
Only three "end game" dungeons were left for me to explore, and the time investment involved to reach those was something I wasn't willing to invest. At all.
The entire "virtual world" thing hasn't slowed up at all. In fact, Reuters recently opened up a virtual office in the game Second Life which will be staffed by a virtual reporter.
If you haven't yet heard of Second Life, you will. It's more or less designed to be an approximation of your first life. Sorta. It's complexity is astounding. Read the wikipedia entry.
So, to sum up the entire experience, I think South Park puts it best (thanks Scott for the links):

this reminds me of a chuck klosterman essay on the sims. in his book sex, drugs and cocoa puffs*. the essay simply starts with this sentence: "I am not a benevolent God."

Funny, I quit the WoW experience a couple months ago as well. Interesting. We should chat some about the whole experience.
