Littlefield's Preening Mediocrity & You Can Find Me In Da ClubLib

I didn't really know what to think when I received the invitiation to "ClubLib" the Chattanooga library fundraiser which claims to be turning the library into a dance club, sports bar, cybercafe, and "non-creepy homeless guys looking at porn" location.
The invitation itself was nicely designed. I can't seem to figure out who designed it. My money was on Maycreate (it's the serif fonts!), but Brian deny's responsibility.
The idea of a library bar has stirred up some controversy. My thinking is that public libraries are slowly becoming irrelevant, and that innovation is appropriate to inspire public interest in a good thing like a library.
Last Tuesday the Mayor was on WGOW with Jeff Stiles where he stated that folks would have to "be my age to know who Al Green is." Ron, lets not stay together.

The theme for ClubLib is "Breakin' all the rules!!!"
Just seems like such a lame idea. Perhaps the only thing cheesier would be a disco party. Why would I want to pay $50 for a ticket to sit in a "CyberCafe" (they use this term like it is some new, hip idea)?
Fox news? They probably say similar things about churches that use real wine in their communion ceremony.

"public libraries are slowly becoming irrelevant" -- that's a pretty lame thing to say. public libraries in chattanooga are somewhat outdated and underfunded. that ABSOLUTELY does not mean that public libraries are becoming irrelevant. you should see public libraries in asheville, north carolina, where i live. they are truly community gathering places and used by many, many people for a variety of reasons.

It's possible it was a "lame" thing to say. I'm more curious as to whether or not it was incorrect. I'd love to know the numbers on the use of libraries over the last 50 years.

Here's one source of information about current library use:

I've worked in libraries for a number of years and spent the past year in a public library in the Boston area. I would say that public libraries are becoming irrelevant and most of the people in libraries know this. It doesn't say a lot for you when the main thing you advertise is something most people can get in their own houses everyday.

Maybe you should check out the link I posted yesterday. Not everyone has computers and books at home.
