All Manner of News: Some Great Some Not
First the really cool news: Fran Thompson (of Fran & Aaron) gave birth this evening 'round 6 pm to a healthy baby boy named Levi.
Somewhat less cool news, but great nonetheless: the Detroit Tigers are going to the ALCS. I've been quiet about the Tigers all year, and I don't plan on writing a bunch about them. I love baseball but I find it very hard to watch. Not because I don't find it enjoyable, but because it is engrossing, nail biting, and an utterly grating game. the tension just builds and I find myself about to have a heart attack. I usually have to watch it alone.
I grew up going to Tigers games with my Dad (boy I love old Tiger Stadium), and my hero was Alan Trammell (though seeing Cecil Fielder hit a home run ranks up there on my all time memories list). I want them to win desperately, mostly for my Dad. His office is like a Tiger's museum. Right now I'm thankful they toppled the Evil Empire.
The heartbreaking news is that Mario Manningham is hurt and will be out for the Penn State game this Saturday. I'm not deeply concerned. Mario did make a couple of acrobatic catches this year in the vein of Braylon Edwards, but I feel his sucess was due more to offensive playcalling that has skewed heavily towards the run which has enabled a good bit single coverage. Henne's accuracy is near perfect, so all Manningham has had to do is make one move and he'd be wide open for the bomb. Arrington has experienced similar success, so I don't see this affecting the Wolverine's a great deal over the rest of the season, and certainly not against the horrible Nittany Lions.
Still, I want him back, desperately, for the Ohio State game. In my opinion that game decides the National Championship (unless Florida suddenly gets a defense).

How sad that Manningham, the guy who caught the TD last year to ruin PSU's undefeated season, is not going to be in Happy Valley this weekend. I am sure that there are several guys who would have liked to have gotten some hits on him. Of course, there's always the QB that threw that pass.
Seriously, I want UM to have all it's cards on the table. On the off (way off) chance that PSU pulls one out, then I don't want there to be any excuses. ;)

Hey, PSU wins, I tip my hat to them. With the talent we recruit, we're not allowed excuses, even were we to lose *gulp* Hart for some reason. Even without Manningham, we're a well oiled machine right now.
Still, there will always be a soft spot in my heart for The New Math

The Canadians I spent Thanksgiving with this past weekend were rejoicing over the Tigers' win and I was somewhat puzzled over their devotion to an American team, so I asked them "How many Canadian baseball teams are there?"
"Um...I think Toronto has one." Some brief conferral. "Yup. That's it. Just Toronto."
So rooting for the Detroit Tigers suddenly made a lot more sense.

Weird stuff. I lived in Pontiac for the first 9 years of my life, and grew up a Tigers fan as well. My Dad knew their Chaplain and I have a baseball signed by all of the '84 Tigers (World Series Champs!). My hero was also Alan Trammell, but my personal moment was Lou Whitaker hitting a pinch-hit walk-off grand slam in about '85. One question though: don't I remember you being a "big" Red Sox fan, back 2 years ago when they won the world series? Is this bandwagon-jumping, or am I missing the boat?
That said, Michigan needs Manningham for the long haul. That dude is freaking amazing (and not just because of what he did against my Irish, which was impressive). Regardless, they're my #2 right now. By far.

Josh, I definitely know Pontiac. I was technically born in Rochester, but lived in Lapeer. I was only there for about 9 months before my Dad got his first gig as a pastor in Wisconsin. We still came back most summers to visit with Family etc.
As to the bandwagon thing, that's a very long story.
I also def. agree that we need Manningham for the long hall. Matthews, the freshman who will likely be taking Mannignham's spot, isn't quite as fast as M-Ham, and I think part of Mario's sucess this year has been the incredible spead of all our recievers messing up the safety's pulling to help cover.

There's this Pastor I know who was donning a Tigers tie at the pulpit to celebrate the win. He was met with some resistance, especially as it's hard to find a shirt to match a black, blue and orange tie, but he did it anyways. It was a sight to see - you would have been proud.
