Irresponsibly Reported

But dude, Snakes on a Plane

The best obit on Jane Jacobs I've read, thanks to Scott for the link.

Great review of United 93 from L.A. Weekly film critic Scott Foundas. [link from Mesh] I will be seeing the film, though I can't grasp mentally how a film could be made about 9-11.

Joel Garver is one of the few theology blogs I read anymore, at least from the Reformed / Presbyterian world. Because, on our little ghetto, he gets it: "We're our own worst enemies".

The Scots Alumni page is still rocking. If you haven't yet signed up, by all means do so.

There has already been a few cases of overt censorship (in good Covenant fashion), mostly relating to a group G. Bauss started about contract breakers and chapel skippers and another group started by my wife that said, well, "I'm Having Really Awesome Sex Now That I'm Married" (who am I to argue with that?).

It was April's first taste of censorship and I feel for her. It cuts deep at our American sensibilities, being told, authoritatively, you can't say that. But Covenant loves to make grandious & self-justifying gestures towards "standards" which are neither communicated nor written down. Anywhere.

But whatever I feel about the situation is based more on knowing how my wife feels then any vested interest I have in those objects of censorship. I got used to, a very long time ago, many of the empty standards of Covenant and the pure joy & fun one can find in poking at them or openly breaking them. But that's my choice and it comes with certain costs, fees I don't mind paying really. Humor, IMO, is Divine.

Speaking of which: I owe an apology to all you single Covenant Alumni Ladies out there who felt the flame of amorous hope rekindled when Nathan Brinkerhoff added you as a friend. Like the man said, he's got 99 problems...

"loves to make grandious & self-justifying gestures?"

uh.. yeah... wow... grandiose...

While I will admit that the humor of several situations were lost, the pot that is Josiah may want to take pause about calling the kettle Covenant, black.

Today, a resounding lack of humor hit the blog site "Irresponsible Journalism" at exactly 3:03PM EST. The cause of the absence was not immediately obvious, but dangerous levels of earnestness and solemnity were detected just northeast of Lookout Mountain in the area of St. Elmo.

Sounds dramtic, sorry I missed it.

Posted by: stelmodad at April 28, 2006 03:28 PM

Cynics!

Dave, while my hyprocisy (and kettle calling) may know no bounds, my self-knowledge does. If you could enlighten on this particular inconstency (which I more than concede likely exists), I would be in your debt.

I don't get the "lack of humor" issue either. Now I'm just confused. Dear associates, help me. I'm being deathly sincere here.

And, its just a technicality, but St. Elmo is southeast of Lookout Mtn.

I'm getting tired of these snakes.

Ryan, I just got it. Thanks to Mesh. The prospects of a world in which there was not at least some substantive overlap in our respective senses of had me slightly alarmed.

So back at it: oh I'm guilty of grandstanding, but Dave, c'mon, you can't really take Covenant's overtures to some obvious "standards" that are hardly universal amongst the Alumni all that seriously?

Don't get me wrong, I'd put you in the majority were there to be some kind of consensus, and persoanlly I'd be in the minority. But:

1. don't pass it off like it's universal
2. don't pass it off like it's objective
3. don't act like this conversation isn't a giant counter-example proving points a. & b.
4. Ed's a party man (where is he on the conversation? I'm baiting him right now)
5. and most importantly, even if it is universal & objective, its redonkulous to assume that everyone is aware of the "standards"

So now I'm just confused. Is their some overly sentimental group of Covenant Alumni out there assuming we all think alike? Or heck, even that we'd all get along? How unrealistic and dishonest is that!

Josiah
So you finally decided to post about this on your blog? I've really enjoyed reading it by the way. I ran across it back during the whole Covenant firing scandal. It seemed like you were one of the only ones with balls to talk about it. In fact, I kinda wish you pursued it a little louder even, but good for you for doing that. More folks need to have backbone. And also, I've been meaning to ask you, whatever happened to your online Bagpipe venture? I kinda figured that they'd censor that in a minute---it seems to stop before it started.

I must admit that I wasn't swift enough to get Ryan's comment; was it a retort? some witty repartee? Likely something that I missed because I do not know his style; perhaps said because he may not know mine.

As far as pot calling or what have you, I doubt you've fallen into hypocrisy or even hypocrisito... What I do find amuzing, in an Arsenic and Old Lace Kinda way, is you calling out Covenant for essentially standards grandstanding while you seemingly grandstand for questioning standards.

Your passion is well known, for which I suspect you're a bit happy about, but I fear that it may perhaps be too quick and skilled - darn colleges teaching these youngn's word power and all.

Anyway, none of this is mean as a public admonishment, but rather a thinly veiled public concern from a friend weakly hidden as a jest.

BFF, OXOXO

Okay - I've been baited, but I'm just going to say it's not that I stick with Covenant through thick and thin. It's that I have respect for Covenant and the people that work there and I believe that showing respect is an honorable thing to do.

So Nathan is indiscriminately befriending every single female alum (and by "single" I refer to marital status in addition to any accentuational functions the word might serve) on the network?

This would explain many things...

Posted by: funke at April 29, 2006 12:05 PM

Um, generally, just Long Live Josiah. and damn the man. etc.

thank goodness someone can say these things because for those of us still in the system it burns in our very flesh. yes. very freaking flesh.
