Irresponsibly Reported 1

I've got to come up with a general name for posts where I just toss out random links and commentary. Irresponsibly Reported? Suggestions welcomed. Feel free to be irreverent/disparaging.

Good article from Design Observer on the Google logo. Despite being a self-proclaimed design fanboy, in all its forms, I'm wary to speak on the field in a general sense, with any tone of authority (no, really). Still (see!), I've been nursing a thought/argument/postulate on the nature of good design for some time now, and have been reluctant to share given that its likely been stated a dozen times before by far more reputable people.

My point is that if design is meant to communicate a message, and if good design is meant to communicate a message in a compelling fashion (and that compelling fashion should be equivalent and complimentary to the message itself), the Google by all means is excellent design.

While some things (re: most flash websites) may be dang cool (or in some cases just whiz-bangy), most do not communicate the message in a appropriately compelling fashion, they instead showoff, sound and fury, nothing, etc. Usually the soul (i.e. the message) has been lost or altogether removed.

Last night our Hoppy's Last Resort Pub Trivial team took 2nd place. We were tied for first and went into a runoff, where we had to take Pi out to as many decimal places as we could. All we could remember was 7/22, so that only got us out 7 or so places. The other team got more. There's always next week.

Re: Flash Websites

While I think most flash websites suffer from their inability to communicate their message, I find that sometimes its not even the fault of the designer, but of the medium. The limitations of flash oftentimes make it feel like you are doing extra work to accomplish the same thing you could have done in html.

btw. adsense eh? I wondered when you would take advantage of your prime real-estate.
