Google does it again.
Genius.
Of course students/alumni will have to suffer the little targeted ads on the right, but it is Gmail after all, the best web based e-mail tool around.

I hadn't known of this before, but Microsoft is offering the same type deal with Windows Live. Free hosted web-based email for educational institutions. http://www.imagine-wl.com/education/
