Anna Begins, the Musical Equivalent to Say Anything

What started as a voyeuristic romp through Joseph Nichol's iTunes library (I'm borrowing his laptop today) became something of a stroll down memory lane.

For whatever reason I decided to listen to Counting Crow's "August & Everything After" which is, and I'll cling to this till the grave, a damn fine album. Discussing it 'round the shop, we've come to the conclusion that August & Everything After is the musical analog to Say Anything / Lloyd Dobler, in particular the song "Anna Begins".

Oh to be 19 again, completely emotionally masturbatory, with no. sense. of. perspective. whatsoever.

That's a pretty accurate analogy.
I would have to say "Murder of One."
That song is pump up.

You are right! That is a dem fine album! I still pull it out "regularly." And yes, I finally replaced my cassette tape, but am still using CD's! :-)

Except that Say Anything is the most over-hyped movie of the '80's.

So true. I love that album. On a completely unrelated note, I would love to know what April thought of the Kiera Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice.

Please note: The phrase "So true" was referring to Josiah's insightfulness, not to the previous comment regarding one of my favorite movies of all time. Yes, I admit that I am one of those women that Chuck Klosterman writes about who want to marry Lloyd Dobler.

Omigoodness. I put that album on and am taken completely away. Probably one of my first albums, actually. Led to a lot of other albums. If I was into music list making, it would be on my top ten.

To know "Anna Begins" is to love it. Josiah Roe is about to meet "Anna Begins."

adam duritz sums up our collective 90's youth in one line, "and when she sneezes i believe it's love... but i'm not ready for that sort of thing."

Posted by: tacyjane at January 18, 2006 09:35 AM

That is my favorite line in the song as well (well, several run a close second). But, what do you mean "youth"? I appreciate the lyrics so much better now than I ever did in high school. Maybe I can blame that on my highly conservative pentecostal upbringing. In any case, "Anna Begins" is still the song that I immediately click back to the beginning so that I can hear it again each time that I play the CD.

oops... of course i quoted it wrong. it's "EVERYTIME she sneezes i believe it's love, but Oh Lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing."

JoRoe, I think your estimation of that album may just be the first thing we agree on. Cheers!
