Appalachian State National Champions

Last night Damon, himself dressing as bigfoot, procured for me a Santa costumed and we both went to the NCAA I-AA Championship game at Finley Stadium between the Panthers of Northern Iowa and the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

Naturally, Bigfoot and Santa Clause are huge App State fans. We're proud to be a Mountaineer.

Damon had also made large placards for us to wear that said "the BCS is make believe" or "the BCS is a hoax" on one side and "playoffs work every year".

Nothing after this point in my blog is doing to do the evening any justice. Mesh took photo's and I think Ali did too. I'll get them up when I can.

So, I had my picture taken with everyone from little children to drunk sorority girls (sortof like hillbilly sorority girls), I conducted/cheerlead the one large section of the app state crowd at the end zone in a few app state fight songs, I made it on ESPN with Damon, and charged the field when App State won in the end.

At this point I was mauled by thousands of App State fans, including a few football players and the Chancellor of App State, all shouting "Thank you Santa". In one particularly touching moment a smiling, teary-eyed what looked to be seven year old girl came up to me with her mom and said "Thanks for getting me what I wanted for Christmas Santa", to which I could responded "it was your letter that did it". Hey, it was nearly one in the morning and I was exhausted. You think of something better.

It took me probably a full 20 minutes to escape the crowd. App State fans are an enthusiastic, warm-hearted bunch, and every single one of them wanted a high five or a huge or a photo. I mostly just yelled "Merry Christmas" at the top of my lungs. Mesh and I then stopped by Hoppy's where, interestingly enough, a large group of older App State fans proceeded to buy me beer.

It was a surreal night. Damon is the man. If he ever calls you out of the blue, know that you're in for something memorable.

I saw you two on the tube last night. The crowd I was with went crazy with joy when you two popped up. Very nicely done.

Thanks for the compliments, but one request - it was the Division I-AA championship, not Division 2.

Go Apps!

Dang, I miss you, man.

Yeah, Josiah, it was Div 1A, not 2. Anyway, you forgot to mention how a bunch of girls (most of them Ap. State band members) kept asking us what the BCS was. I really wanted to just say "ask your boyfriend, he'll know."

Ya, I fixed that I-AA issue in the entry.

The girls not knowing about the BCS thing was funny, especially because there was that one 9 year old kid and his 7 year old sister who both knew what the BCS was.

Another fav was when this one female ASU fan asked me for 38" rims for her truck. Girls these days. Whatever happened to barbie dolls?
