The Monstrous Regiment of Women
What's wrong with these people? Watch the trailer. They're not being ironic, at least not how I'd hope.
The cheap, pretentious, and slogan-oriented nature of some of these movements bother me: "epistemologically self conscious" "rebuilding the Christian family, one household at a time" "Christian Hedonism" "9marks" "reformation21" "things to be believed, things to be done" etc. Just do it, have it your way, right away, 'cause I'm lovin' it.
I'm starting to think the Reformation was the first branded movement in history re: The Five Solas. The irony to me is how the whole propositional nature of the Ref/Pres thing has come to have slogans that embody little actual propositional content but refer more to cultures, lifestyles, and people. It could of course be argued that no "slogan" actually does have purely propositional referents, but now I'm just rambling.
I have particular affection for 9marks & reformation21 as they indicate that the nascent Reformed and Presbyterian marketing departments have finally entered 1999 and started doing the whole name and number thing. Up next: pixel fonts and the excessive use of drop-shadows!

Heh. Ok, that wasn't meant as a rip. at all. But I'm sure you know that. I wrote that post rather hastily, and looking back, I could see how it might be construed as such. So it isn't.

Let's at least say a little in their defense. Consider Christ's attitude towards the Pharisees and Saducees. In modern terms, fundamentalists of the kind that seem to annoy us both so much are parallel to the Pharisees, but it's mainline liberal churches that can be seen as parallel to the Saducees. The former believe the right things about the gospel - mostly - but have become caught up in discussions of legal minutae. The latter are more concerned with the place of the church in society, with "having a seat at the table".
Christ chews out the Pharisees on a regular basis. They should know better. But how does he treat the Saducees? Not at all. He basically ignores them. They almost don't count.
All this by way of saying that the folks at VisionForum may be wrongheaded, but we still have to deal with them.

In defense of the Reformation, it should be noted that the solas weren't codified until after the Reformation, by Protestant scholastics.
But perhaps that's just the dissertating pedant in me talking....

The real offense in that trailer is against good typography.

I think that's the first time I've ever heard the word "misogyny" used in a positive sense.

I love how "women's suffrage" get's ranked up there with "NOW" and "abortion". Makes me warm and fuzzy inside. Must find a kitchen....

Well, I have let the steam that rolled off the top of feminine head disapate and I have stopped stewing. I am inviting you to my blog to read about the monstrous women, those ladies who, while not fitting into "Doug's vision" have, none the less, furthered the cause of Christ. First in the series begins on Friday, October 7th!
