Peace & Crime
I find the immediacy of the Mash-up the quality separating (beyond the unique nature of its medium) it from film or design. I think this immediacy, the ability to *get it* (both conceptually and practically) now makes it the ultimate postmodern art form.
There's a huge discussion here, and I don't have the time to put all my thoughts together. I wish Paul was around.
Anyways, you must check out this remix of Lennon's Imagine. Thanks to Alice for the headsup.
Matt Kubilus made this great St. Elmo Crime-map. Ticks me off too, 'cause we had talked about doing this in the office and never got around to it. There's been an real crime outbreak in St. Elmo recently, and its gotten the 'hood in quite a stir. Some folks (myself included) have taken to cruising the neighborhood when possible. This weekend there was a murder, which is really scary, especially since no crimes up until this point have been violent.
The general sense that I've gotten from the few people I've talked too is that the crimes are motivated either by frustration over, well, gentrification and/or a group of kids just 'causing problems. I have no idea how the murder fits in with all of this.

Yes, scarry. This person was actually found in the backyard of a friend of mine. Needless to say, she is not going to be staying there for a while.

Wasn''t a certain professor's son mugged too while joggin, thats a crime.

A real journalist would know it's not a "murder" until someone is convicted of same.

Agreed, though he was, reportedly, shot in the back of the head.

That's not confirmed. We know he was shot in the head. And was lying face-down. That's the cop story, anyway.

Ahhh...
Ok. Then if he wasn't shot in the back of the head, there's a chance it was suicide. And if it was suicide, the P.I.O.S.' silence about the case is predictable.

Pretty scary stuff, indeed. I know that there is no neighborhood that can be 100% safe from crime, but I can't imagine how difficult it must be for your immediate community.
We were actually looking at some houses in that area, and I'll be honest, as stupid as it sounds, I'm rethinking that. I know I shouldn't let one crime deter me from considering St. Elmo as a place to call home, but it's difficult not to. On the other hand, it's probably just a knee-jerk reaction on my part. I'll get over it.

other beth - please reconsider your knee jerk reaction to this sudden spree. stelmo is a wonderful community unlike any anywhere in chattanooga. if you want to be a part of community that considers itself as such, and galvinizes as such, and is involved in neighbor-to-neighbor relations - you won't find a better place. I have lived here for 6 years. i live alone and 2 blocks from where the body was dumped. And yet i feel because i know my neighbors and we are involved in eachothers lives, and are conscious of one another - that it is a better place to live. This is what defines stelmo not the recent spike.
meanwhile, as far as the crime goes - as a promoter of my hood i understand what bad press can mean at times like this; but as a SWF i really would like the police to be more forthcoming about the facts going on. knowledge is power. even if it has to make the news. don't disable me by keeping me from the facts.

I don't believe the police are hiding anything. They still don't know a lot. Katrina evacuees don't exactly keep regular schedules.
CPD is now confirming, by the way, that Don Airline was shot in the back of the head. So the suicide theory now seems more problematic.
