Folding John Wayne's T-Shirts
I make mix CD's for my brother-in-law Joel for his birthday and Christmas. I'm working on a set right now for him. I've got about 100 songs I want to get over to him. Here's the first CD, which ended up rather dark, which wasn't my intention.
Organ Donor - DJ Shadow
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
Pon de Replay - Rihanna
Crash and Burn Girl - Robyn
Take Your Mama - Scissor Sisters
Cochon Cochon - Menlo Park
The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands Say Ya!
Keepsake Pt. 1 - Grumpy Bear
John Wayne Gacy, Jr. - Sufjan Stevens
A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left - Andrew Bird
The Libertine - Patrick Wolf
Now Wow - The Kills
Today - Smashing Pumpkins
Mother - Danzig
Midnight In A Perfect Work - DJ Shadow
Everything in its Right Place - Radiohead
I figure he's 16 now, so he's probably ready for some good adult depression. None of the songs chosen are meant to be definitive representations of the artist. Other CD's will have more Sufjan, Andrew Bird, Radiohead, Pumpkins, and a whole slew of other artists.
Anyways, I find it twistedly ironic that I made it in 3 songs from "Take Your Mama" by Scissor Sisters to Sufjan's "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." (who lived with his mother when he committed his first murder). Bizarre. Like I said, I didn't mean it to come out this dark.

John Wayne Gacy, Jr. is a spooky, spooky, beautiful song. And I'm going to see him perform it in two (2) days!

I don't know. The more I listen to it, the more I begin to hate Sufjan for writing it.
Posted by: Chris at September 14, 2005 11:53 AM
It's the most haunting song I've ever heard, but yet Sufjan really hits the nail on the head at the end of the song.
Posted by: Illman at September 14, 2005 12:27 PM
Now that's a perspective that begs for explication.
Posted by: mesh at September 14, 2005 12:28 PM
I was talking to Chris with that comment. Illman jumped in. Crazy Illman.

I don't really know how to explain it, and it might be retaliation to the idea that everyone in Brooklyn loves Sufjan. But there's something that seems terribly exploitive about the song. I don't trust him. It may be that he asks the listener to put every single ounce of emotion they have into it, while keeping his own hid. He's dangling the carrot, and making us do all the work of giving ourselves to the song.

Oh, brother...

Badonicus, you have an opinion on Sufjan Stevens? I'm sure you'd like him. He's white.
Posted by: mesh at September 14, 2005 02:37 PM
And he's good looking.

WTF is this Badlands Little Geneva crap? And why are you on this blog? Boy, you'd better pray we don't cross paths or I'll be shoving my boot so far up your ass the sweat on my knee will quench your thirst.

He doesn't hide his emotion. He does the opposite. He sings about the reality of the human state, and in doing so gives humanity to JWG. Brilliantly, Sufjan then simply provides the perspective in equating his human brokenness to JWG in comparison to God's holiness. It's an emotion of humility. It's also a statement that which echoes Paul's statement when he called himself "chief" of sinners. I only wish I could be as honest with myself as Sufjan is with all his listeners.
Yes Mesh, I agree. But in the great words of the man known as Seal, "But we're never gonna survive..."

Chris, you need to check out the collaborative EP by Calexico and Iron & Wine, if you haven't already. It's really damn good.

Stop the Illinoise from Transformatum
Josiah’s latest post about Sufjan Stevens finally made me break down and purchase Illinois from iTunes. I was just going to buy the JWG song, but with twenty four tracks at $0.99 each $9.99 seemed like such a bargain. I hope I like it.
