Sufjan Stevens Cover by David Crowder
So a little hub-bub has been stirred up in the Sufjan community over David Crowder covering "o god where are you now (in pickeral lake? pigeon? marquette? mackinaw?)" in an upcomming CCM worship/compilation album entitled "A Collision".
I'm unfamiliar with David Crowder's music and its highly unlikely I would ever listen to a CCM compilation album. Things of that nature either make me want to forsake Christianity or doubt that I ever had it to begin with (i.e. mebbe they've got it and I don't).
Regardless, it's got me wondering if this little upswing in ridiculously talented Christian musicians with serious indie-cred will be able to avoid the bastardly machinations of CCM and keep from selling their soul. It's funny 'cause I guess its analogous to the whole indie-rock problem in general (nothing band gets a cult following, big label snatches them up, loss of creative control, suckiness ensues).
Stay strong Sufjan. Stay strong.
Once people start buying your albums in Wal-Mart, I don't think you need "big labels" to bring home the $$.

Josiah-
I tried finding your e-mail address but couldn't so I am just posting here. Any thoughts about starting up DC Blogs? I live in DC now, along with many others from Covenant and Chattanooga, and while some of them already have blogs, there are some (like me) who might be motivated to start one if a site dedicated to our nation's capital-dwellers existed.

Anna, would love to do so. We even have the domain name, I believe. "beltwaybloggers" or something like that. I'll put it on the list.

"Collision" is not a compilation album, it's the latest album from Crowder's band. Many people outside of the CCM community speak highly of the creativity and musicianship of this band, as they happen to be quite talented.
The CCM label is unfortunate here.

i can't begin to describe how incredibly ridiculous the covering of this song is. i lost sleep over it, seriously.

it's a surprising cover, but encouraging if anything. i agree, most CCM is really awful stuff, but david crowder band is actually a pretty solid rock group. a talented group of guys that are appreciated by some talented mainstream acts like jimmy eat world, and unlike many other musicians in the CCM scene, sincere about what they sing. at least some band on the CCM scene understands real music and is attempting to challenge and expand the norm of CCM.

I love Sufjan Stevens and I love David Crowder. The DCB is on a Christian label, but he makes music because the people around him started telling him christian music sounds like shit. The album and the song are pretty amazing, they are worth checking out.

Just because DCB is on a "christian label" shouldnt discredit their talent. The fact that a very well known not "indie" band appreciates sufjan stevens enough to cover a song is a beautiful thing. On the same cd they cover other artists such as loretta lynn.

First of all - I get extremely annoyed by 'music elitists' who think their underground music is so much better than everything else.
Secondly, David Crowder is an amazing musician and songwriter - Christian or not. He's actually a worship leader, and he and his band produce their own stuff. I'd check out the band before you start bashing them for covering a song.

Seriously, to the author who wrote this, you're the reason why music gets stereotyped, you would like everything packaged in boxes. Musicians are people, they have choices and they have communities. Take your cookie cutter and use it on your own dough.
