Weekend Football Roundup
I figure I might as well just post my top 25 and comment as I go. Saturday was glorious. 6 hours of great football (April and I took a little break towards the end of the UGA v Boise State game for a Stella ride). Gosh I love the fall.
Here goes:
1. USC - pretty much did what was expected vs. Hawaii. Was surprised to see them give up 17. Makes me wonder about Glanville's defensive coordinator chops. I'd like to think that USC is vulnerable, somewhere, anywhere but I just don't see them not going undefeated again this year unless a defensive powerhouse makes it to the NC game.
2. Texas - Poor LA Lafayette. I'm still convinced Texas is vulnerable. Their secondary is a joke. Of course, even if you've got a solid enough defensive schema (with smart enough linebackers) that can slow Young, you still have to outscore them.
3. Iowa - The game versus (at least for the first half) Ball State was absolutely terrifying. A one-sided sadistic pounding. Iowa believes this is their year, and they're playing like it. It's all coming down to the October 22nd game versus Michigan. Honestly, I'm worried.
4. Georgia - all I can say is why on earth were these guys not ranked higher in the pre-season? They absolutely mandhandled Boise State. Even after loosing Smith & Pollack, their defensive was nearly flawless. Shockley, oh boy Shockley. The kid can throw and run and make it all look effortless. This is his year. Forget Marcus Vick, Shockley is the next Vick and he's got a better arm.
5. - 6.
IF Miami wins tonight versus FSU (and I predict they will) then they go #5. If not, Michigan is 5.
SO, Michigan. I'm scared even putting them as high as they are. Offensively I simply can't ask for more. Two incredible running backs. One nimble, one power. A great receiving crew (though Arrington getting hurt worries me slightly, but he was the #3 receiver and Carr swears he's got some great kids waiting in the wings and I'm not inclined to doubt him). Still, we gave up how many points to Northern Illinois?!? This is going to be a rough year.

7. Florida - you just wait. The SEC is going to come down to the cocktail party in Jacksonville.
8. Ohio State - Crap. Betts showed some consistency.
9. Louisville - sure, it was against Kentucky, but nothing in yesterday's game showed me they shouldn't be anywhere other than in the top 10. The Brohm - Bush combination is glorious.
10. Tennessee - I've said it before and I'll say it again. UT has simply no consistency in their quarterbacks. Ainge has got a great arm but no accuracy or poise. Claussen has the poise and accuracy, but no arm. Fulmer needs to decide which of these problems he's going to fix if UT is going to be as great as everything *thinks* they are.
11. LSU - didn't play. I have no problem penalizing teams who have off-weaks.
12. VT - they won which is what matters. I do think Marcus Vick will find his groove. The coaching is too good at VT for him not to.
13. Notre Dame - Charley Weiss. The man is a genius. I simply cannot wait for the Michigan - Notre Dame game next week. I think it's an issue if Notre Dame's defense can keep Michigan's offensive from scoring more points than their offense (since Michigan's D isn't going to be stopping anything). So, its a race!
14. FSU - even if they loose tonight, I see them right here.
15. Purdue
16. Oklahoma - I'm tempted to move them lower. But they've still got Peterson and Stoops. My gut is that they'll drop out of the top 25 by seasons end. I can't see them NOT loosing 4.
17. UVA
18. TCU - yes, I realize there's something bizarre about this team being ranked lower than a team they beat. No excuse.
19. Boston College
20. Oregon - they have one job this season: beating USC
21. Arizona State - same job as Oregon.
22. Clemson - people need to start taking the tigers more seriously.
23. Georgia Tech - I can't believe I'm putting Tech in the top 25, but I've got a soft spot for the underdogs. We'll see how it pans out.
24. Auburn - how the mighty have fallen.
25. Texas A&M
In the wings: Cal, Alabama, Pittsburgh, Michigan State

Not to worry son, Michigan was using N. Ill to test out all their defensive plays and players. They went down to third string (and threw in a few cheerleaders as well). Next Saturday is Notre Dame, the most hated, even more than Ohio State.

What ever happened to the big 12, they used to be so good. Now who do they have Texas? They always lose. I just checked Mizzou's schedule the only ranked team they play is texas.
I remember the good old days of Nebraska, Kansas, K State, and all those guys duking it out.

TN at #10? Are you out of your mind? Since when do you know jack about QBs. As a freshman Aignes took TN to the SEC championship. Everyone believes this will be an awesome year for him. Its scary to think what he will be like by 2007.
On the otherhand, Shockley is a total fluke. There is a reason he hadn't started a single game until his senior year. Georgia at #4? They will be lucky to be in the top 15 by the end of the season.

Yes, there is a reason Shockley didn't start until this year: David Greene- who holds the record for the most wins as a D-I QB. Can't blame Shockley for that.

First let me say I am a Tennessee fan and very excited about this year. Now let me say, I was not impressed with there performance on Saturday. Although UAB is not a cupcake team, Tennessee should have handled them. I think you need to check your facts on Ainge last year. Although he has great potental, after Saturday, he has a lot to work through before he is ready for the big time. I don't think I am ready for another Clausen year, I hope Ainge gets ready. Go Vols.

Vols Fan - you're mistaken...Eric Ainge and the other volunteers wound up in the SEC Championship last year by default, the freshman quarterback certainly did not "take" them there. UT got lucky when they beat a superior UGA team, which is the only reason they won the SEC East. I'm not sure why you get scared when you think of Eric Ainge playing football next year...I predict Eric Ainge won't even be playing in 2007.
On the other hand, DJ Shockley is experiencing what Auburn's Jason Campbell did last year...maturation, both physically and mentally (something UT got to see up close on twice last year). Yes, there is a reason he hadn't started a game until now...his name was David Greene. It's the same reason AU's Brandon Cox hadn't started until Saturday...there was a talented QB in place, so he got to ride the pine and talk to the cheerleaders. Luckily no one expected much out of Auburn this year...you can't loose guys like Campbell, Williams and Brown without feeling the sting (in Saturday' case, the sting came courtesy of yellow jackets).
In other news, my Presbyterian College Blue Hose are now 2 - 0 (with impressive wins over The Universtiy of West Georgia and Fayettville State University). First hand reports claim that the Maker's Mark has been flowing freely at the Theta Chi house, and that the Bloody Mary's have just enough black pepper on top for it to taste like Fall is really here. Can anyone spare a piece of celery?

Tennessee will lose 3 games this year. As well as Auburn. I predict GA and FL in the SEC finals. You can quote me on that. USC, as much as I hate them, will go #1.
I say Texas vs USC in the final game.
PS: WAR EAGLE!!

Let's not forget about the Tide, if they keep Broyde Croyle healthy and the defensive line and get it together like when they played USC gamecocks I think they might be in there for that SEC finals.
