I Feel Like Covenant is Screwing Over Its Alumni (in one particular respect)
So April is taking a statistics class this fall, MWF 8-8:50 and she has to pay $100 for a parking sticker.
They can consider it my donation for the year.
But seriously, I wish the college had a good alumni association going, perhaps with a "dues paying" level where perks were things like free Covenant schwag, free parking, access to library research resources (boy would I love jstor access again), and other stuff. I'd be far more likely to kick down $$ like that instead of ponying up $100 bucks for "free" classes.

Wow. That seems an unduly harsh title, Josiah. I've only attended two other institutions of higher education, and both made alumni pay for on-campus parking (more, I think, in both cases than Covenant is charging). Further, neither one handed alumni free courses. Covenant's deal for free alumni tuition is a pretty sweet one. I wouldn't enjoy paying the $100 for parking, but I probably wouldn't characterize that as "screwing" the alumni either, given the other perk.
I'm all for a dues-paying alumni association. I don't think it would take a huge fee to enable the college to offer alumni a lot of the things you've mentioned ... and maybe lifetime email, too?

other than the "screwing the alumni" part, I think you guys might be onto something. Unfortunately, since we're in a consumer driven culture - we tend to enjoy getting something... For those alum in the area - there could be some kind of annual membership to attend social events, use of certain resources, designated sections at sporting events... For those out of the area, shirts, nifty swag, newletters and invites to attend stuff when they can.
(I tried to buy season tickets to the baseball games - but somebody told me they were free...)
Anyway. I hear your pain Josiah, but I think the College needs to stop giving away things that cause it pain and start creatively charging for things that folks would not mind ponying up for.

sorry, but the squeaky wheel is getting old (I know, so stop reading, but you're just too dang compelling). you're getting a FREE CLASS already.
but I'm sure she could find a ride up. it's just getting back that might be tough. or perhaps she could borrow the scooter and stash it somewhere?

My advice: remove your posting on the subject. You only discredit yourself by being so harsh. It's like shooting a kid away with a shotgun who is about to knock over your mail box. Way too much force dude.

yea, it is a bit harsh, but $100 for parking is a heck of a lot of money.

1. Was that really your Dad posting the "way too much force dude" comment?!?
2. Hint: there's visitor parking at Covenant, right? And they don't ticket visitors, right? And by definition, a visitor won't have a parking sticker, right? I'll let April draw her own conclusion here...
3. $100 is still pretty darn cheap for a 3-hour class at a private college, eh?
4. YOU'RE NOT AN ALUMNUS ANYWAY, JOSIAH, YOU'RE STILL A STUDENT!!!

Derek, still annoying for a less than wealthy individual upon expectation of a "free class" to surprisingly have to pay $100. It'd wig anyone out, regardless of how acceptable in principle the fee is.
Dave: agree with you on paying for things people would like.
BobW: who's playing the squeaky wheel? I don't expect to get anything out of this post other than the satisfaction of forcing Derek to take time away from working on his dissertation.
Dad: you're right.
Jeffrey: not alot of visitor parking. Will ticket if she parks there on anything like a regular basis. April is an alumni you hippie dork.

We ran into this last year though it was fifty dollars.
just park at rp or at my house

Don't try the whole "free visitor parking" thing. I had a bad experience. By the way, Josiah, did you know that i still hold the all-time record for the most parking fees in a single semester in Covenant's rich history.

Ok, in this "paying dues" situation, would this be per alumni, or would alumni couples get a discount? Or what if one alumni is married to a non-alumni person that attended covenant but didnt graduate from there? Would we get free Blink food? Can we skip chapel? Can we take the personality test from Jerry King for free? What about Tshirts that say "Covenant Alumni" or "I'm with Covenant Alumni" or "Not a Covenant Alumni"?

we might have it neck and neck there Issac. I didn't attend one semester and took liberty with the "visitors please ignore this" line on the tickets. I got them down to $600 when they removed almost half of the fines that were for threatening to have me towed.

I’d join that alumni association. For the record, an alumnus by definition is any graduate or former student. You don’t have to graduate to wear the alumni t-shirt.
What happend to the days when parking was $35?

Josiah, if April only parks in New Scotland Yard, she can register for only $50, plus get her morning exercise hoofing it to and from class with a mega statistics book. I'd offer a ride, but I'm not up there until 9.
