Go Blue
Man I'm pumped. I start work tomorrow on the Manpad in prep for the season. Mark it on schedules: every Saturday its football at The Manpad. I'm going to draw up a more detailed schedule of game times, plus what other games we'll be watching. Georgia games will come second in priority, with Tennessee games right behind that. Hopefully I'll be able to have two televisions so we can have a couple of games going.
I can't believe Michigan is ranked behind Tennessee in the preseason polls. How ridiculous is that? There ought to be a rule that no team running a two QB offence can be ranked that high. Honestly though, a Michigan / Tennessee Rose Bowl would be awesome, though I'm itchin' to give Texas some payback.
Anyone not want to see USC completely choke this season?

My first and only Big 10 game was Michigan at Illinois in 1995 (Tim Biakabatuka v. Simeon Rice/Kevin Hardy). Great game; unbelievable atmosphere (even amidst the cornfields around Champaign, IL).
It's funny, though--they had a different version of the Big Blue fight song that they were singing in the bars whenever Michigan fans rolled in. It went something like,
Hail, to the motherf*ck*rs,
Hail, to the big c*cks*ck*rs,
Hail, hail, to Michigan....
Not very uplifting.

Derek, you're not allowed on my blog anymore, and you're banished from the manpad until you send me a full apology for posting on my blog.
And I was gonna invite you over for Bourbon and UEFA Champions League games. Gosh.

In old Ohio there's a team
That's known throughout the land,
Eleven warriors, brave and bold,
Whose fame will ever stand,
And when the ball goes over,
Our cheers will reach the sky, O-
HI-O field will hear again
The Buckeye Battle Cry
Drive! Drive on down the field,
Men of the scarlet and grey,
Don't let them through that line,
We have to win this game today,
C'mon Ohio!
Smash through to victory,
We cheer you as we go,
Our honor defend,
We will fight to the end, for
O - HI - O

I was only telling you what the Illini fans were singing. I wasn't suggesting that there was anything of value in what they had to say.
But I do apologize if I've trangressed the prudish boundaries of your blog.
Let me know what else I need to do in order to ingratiate myself with you before the Champions Leage match.

i am now wondering what it is that an illini fan might have to cheer about - and what is an illini?
sports illustrated had the good sense to rank michigan above the hapless volunteers - and above the ohio state buckeyes, no doubt in an effort to make up for that sham national title they won against my miami hurricanes
not that it matters henne, hart, & breaston will be waiting in pasadena -thank you.

Derek, you're banned for blatant disrespect to the Maize and Blue. In this situation, yes, we shoot the messenger.

It probably won't matter for much longer what an Illini is, given the NCAA's ruling that universities can't use Native American mascots or nicknames anymore. (For what's it's worth, the Illini are the Indian tribe that gave their name to the great state of Illinois.)
Here's reaction from Tallahasee, FL (home of the FSU Seminoles) to the decision.
Does anyone else think this is as silly as I do? If the mascots mocked Native Americans that would be one thing, but it seems to me that they were chosen precisely because Native American warriors embodied many of the virtues that these institutions wished to see in their athletes.
As a Scandinavian-American, I'm thinking about asking the NFL to make the Minnesota Vikings change their name. I'll ask the NAIA to change the name of the Berry College Vikings, too.
Anyone want to go after the Schaumburg Saxons of Schaumburg, IL? And what about those awful Covenant College Scots?! Now there's an atrocity!

usc may choke. if madden football is any indication at least.
every time i play my neighbor, he is usc and i'm georgia. we split the games, so it looks like usc may not be as strong as everyone expects.

A few days late here, but Tennessee isn't running a two QB offense anymore. Brent Schaeffer is transfering to a junor college.

Derek:
Talk about silly. I can do you one better. A few years ago (which in my warped sense of time could have been anywhere from 10years to yesterday) PETA started a national campaign to get the Green Bay Packers (as in MEAT packing) to change their name to the Green Bay Pickers (as in fruits and vegetables). They sent out mail asking people to protest the Packers until they changed their name and I am sure they sent naked people to the game in protest.
Another thing I find funny, Derek, is that I've been to illionois. And I gambled there. Do you know what the mascot/logo of the CASINO was? Yep.

As a died-in-the-wool Packers fan (my father grew up 5 blocks from Lambeau Field, so I inherited the curse), that PETA story kills me.
