How Did I Not See This Coming
The American Reformed ability to come up with wacky and myopic theological/lifestyle tangents never ceases to amaze me. I swear, somewhere there is a group of people just sitting around thinking "you know, do you think we could merge Presbyterianism with neo-confederate racism?" or "Those mormons got some cool stuff going on, I bet we could figure out how to combine polygamy & patriarchalism".
What's up with that picture on the right? Is that supposed to be Jesus, or some guy with a couple of his wives? And what's all this "sister-wives" junk. It's like something out of a Robert Jordan novel.
The groups' founder is Michael Tiner. Creepy. And a big ol' Reformed Polygamy website.
ooo, there's even a strange blog bout it all.
Here's the full-blown argument for the patriarchalist/polygamy thing. My favorite chapter is the one entitled "Shorn or Shaven".
Even more bizarre is the article I read this morning. I wonder if that guy from Kansas is a member.

Either way, though, if you go with historic Christianity or a literal hermeneutic, you end up with at least room for polygamy. I have always wondered about this.
I am ok with saying "we don't do it because it's freaky" which seems to be what you're saying, but that might change quite a few theological positions too.

What clinches it for me in this partiuclar case is that the whack-jobs in question can't make a web page to save their paranoiac lives. I can't read about a third of the text because the background obscures it almost entirely. If you're going to come up with crazy, detatched, bizarre theories go right ahead. But if you want anyone to take you seriously, at least make your site legible.
If the design is bad, the content is probably bad. If the design is good, the content may still be bad, but it's not as likely.

A haiku --
Ah, the Internet.
Gift of community to
Creepy subcultures.

"We also offer our services in helping our members find sister wives."
Wait for it...
Wait for it...
Many of whom are, as an added bonus, actually sisters!
(The joke would be funnier if 17 percent of me wasn't convinced that was the original point of the sentence.)

I'm having enough problem with women and I'm not married to one of them. Why anyone would want to be married to more than one beats me.

I'm through with asking the why's about this sort of thing. That pushed me over the edge a little bit. I'm not even sure if there are any real answers to the how's. I'm not sure about anything anymore. They've finally done it. I'm gone.
