Drug Dealz in St. Elmo
I sit on my front porch and watch drug deals occur nearly every day. I know the dealers know I know and they don't seem to care. Last night I even walked down to their "corner" on 55th street & Shauff and had a smoke and said "hello". A few of them were like "who's that white boy?".
After watching 3 deals go down I called up an aquaintance of mine in the local PD. They police are very aware of what's happening on 55th street, including the Stop n' Go's central role in the activity. The hard part is is that these guys are somewhat smart.
Basically their gig works like this: behind the old St. Elmo Auto Parts shop is an alley way that runs parallel to St. Elmo avenue. People looking to buy first stop at the Stop n' Go to talk to the point man, who then direct them to the alley-way and then give the kids at the end of the alley way the g'head (who are within line of sight of the point man). The alleyway dead ends into 55th street, and my house is 3 doors down from 55th, which is why when I'm chillin' on my front porch I can see all this happening.
Anyways, once an "ok'd" vehicle pulls through the alleyway, one kid (usually its one of two 14 year olds) walks up and takes the cash from the drivers side window. Then another kid (usually the older one) walks up and hands off the drugs through the passenger side window.
Then the purchaser (usually a white male) pulls off in his beat-up pickup, lexus, or whatever. I've seen all kinds. Most of the activity occurs in the evening between 5:30 and 7:30, and slows down come dark. I think its because all the buyers are getting off of work.
So anyways, last night 6 cops roll up and do a search of the kids. They actually rounded up what looked to be a half dozen or so folks. Heck, they even gave me a look at one point, like "what's a 'white boy' doing here?" That annoyed me a little bit. But like my neighbor Gerald says "they just doin' their jobs, it'd be a jungle if they weren't here, people dyin' an sh!t". I really dig Gerald. We're going to his house for a 4th of July party. Definitely going to be an interesting experience.
Anyways, that probably came off like I was annoyed at the police which I didn't mean to imply at all. That'd be stupid. Next time I hope they make a cordinated multi-directional approach on that location. They need to come from the alleyway, up 55th, down 55th, from both directions on alabama & St. Elmo, and finally down Shauff. That way the little kids can't run off with the drugs like they did last night.

Oh, fondly I recall sitting on my Shauff porch watching it all go down. My favorite is when the giant Cutlasses pull up in front of that house on the east side of Shauff and blare their horns and cut off their lights....like nobody is going to notice. Oh man...fodder for many short stories.

And in other news, a St. Elmo resident named Josiah Roe was allegedly whacked by belligerent 14-year-olds on 55th St. this morning. One of the suspects, who would only respond to "Little Mookie" (later revealed to be one DeShaun Williams III of 58th St.) accused the late Mr. Roe of "ratting to the po-po" and police have accused him of plotting the killing as an act of revenge.

Our good 'ol next door neighbor seems to be having prostitutes and transvestites living with him, in addition to personally doing drugs and now having quite a few dealers have the run of his apartment too. Police have gotten involved in all the prostitution and dealing at our corner, but nobody can quite finger him--including us. Most of what we know is through the wall, and not actually seen personally. I don't even know his name, and he doesn't seem to drive a vehicle (license plates?). What fun living in our neighborhoods, isn't it!
