The Feds Do The People Right: View Your Credit Report Anytime
Unbelievable. I can't believe I just dropped $40 bucks on a credit report for the mortgage on our new house (we close Friday, BTW) and you can view your report here, for free, and from all 3 major reporting agencies.
Amazing. I've got a few little bugs in there I need to jump on. Annoying. Plus you've gotta love the far more intuitive display of the information than with what you get in the printout that the bank gives you. Glorious.

yeah, from what i've been told, the credit report fee you pay when buying a house is actually paying for someone to look over your report, and not the reports themselves. $40 is pretty cheap though, the bank I talked to was going to charge me $60, and there was no way around it.
I've been developing a credit report analysis tool/report that goes through ones credit report and points out the specific areas that could be improved and how they can be improved. Its pretty neat stuff.

I thought I'd heard something about that recently, but had forgotten all about it. Thanks, man! That was great!

Someone told me that it is bad to use the free credit check because it registers as an inquiry on your credit report, and the more inquiries you have, the worse it looks for you. Does anyone know if inquiries reflect negatively on your credit report and, if so, does checking your credit yourself register as an inquiry?

When you purchase your reports through the credit bureaus it is considered a "soft" inquiry and does not hurt your credit.

Great link Josiah...the cash I dropped on a single report last week stings a bit, but the pain is only temporary. Everyone should take advantage of this opportunity...

Argh... I got all excited only to find out that I live in zone 4, which won't be offering free reports until September. Bummer. Thanks for the link!
