Sleep Now In The Fire

Totten, Mesh, Andy, et. al.

What's the best Rage Against the Machine album? I've gotta go with The Battle of Los Angeles. I know alot of folks might be inclined to go with the first, but TBoLA seems to be the most coherent and mature album of their four.

also, how great is that Andrew Bird "Fake Palindromes" song? unbelievable.

Tonight I'm going to a CTC shmooze session from 5-7. Coptix is now doing the CTC hosting and site development. We've already done the new designs for their e-mail broadcasts, and once the site is properly configured, we'll start implementing the new site design which is so desperately needs.

Then I'll be at the Coulter campaign party at the Choo Choo, getting down, hopefully celebrating victory over the old political skeletons, hopefully. As of about 11:00 a.m. only a little over a hundred people had voted in St. Elmo. Please, anyone who's reading this has already had me harassing them to vote, but regardless of who you vote for do get out there. Its your civic duty, or something.

But still my favorite Rage Against The machine album is Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine. Undoubtedly. Or Something. Killin' In The Name Of is a great song. Battle of LA is probably their worst.

It will be nice to actually have the CTC hosted in the USA. At one point, when the Chugalug people noticed, they actually defended their stance of hosting it in Canada because they couldn't find a cheap place around here....hello! My sites were being hosted locally for about $20 a mo.

Totten I think you're on crack. Renegades is their worst, then Evil Empire. BoLA was a return to form after the incoherence of Evil Empire.

If I can use an analogy, its fair to think of their early album as their best, much like folks like Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree are the best U2 albums (and I know you hate u2, and I know they had earlier albums than that, but its about as far back as many u2 fans memories go), when in actuality Actung Baby is their best and most mature album.

There are plenty of songs on BoLA that are just as compelling as the first album, they just don't have all the "newness" feel of the first.

I beg to differ! You're the one smokin' drugs.

Renegades is the best album by far. It's funky and it's unstoppable. I've lost my taste for all of the other stuff. In a funny way, Rage got me into hip hop music, and hip hop music got me out of Rage.

The only album I like much anymore by them is Renegades.

Although not a single song on that album was written by Rage, their interpretations of all of that classic material are really astoundingly good. I was just listening to it a few monthes ago and couldn't believe how good it was. Pistolgrip Pump, Kick Out The Jams, I'm Housin', Maggie's Farm and The Ghost of Old Tom Joad knocked my socks off. They sound so solid doing Eric B and Rakim. And I'd never have though that Rage could mess with the Boss. And just forget about Dylan.

But damned if they didn't. Those covers are amazing. They really do work. And they bring out the best parts of Rage while adding a little dose of playfulness to the mixture--which I feel Rage was always sorely missing.

...and i guess that's my humble opinion on the matter.

For a second I thought you meant that you were doing a new site for Chattanooga Theatre Centre (CTC). Bummer.

The Battle of Los Angeles is definitely a great album. My favorite song on that one is "Mic Check."

maybe (just MAYBE) I'll take the CTC seriously once you de-uglify their site. please tell me you're doing a new logo for them too?

Posted by: bobw at April 13, 2005 01:42 PM

what are you going to do to get the CTC to take you seriously?

Posted by: JosiahQ at April 13, 2005 02:33 PM

I have no idea what you mean or what you're trying to get at. I didnt know I was trying to be taken seriously.

I remember Rolling Stone raving about how Rage was created to ultimately be fulfilled with Battle of LA, but it was always my least favorite album.

I liked Evil Empire. The first album has seemed rough and amateurish for the last couple of years. But it still might be their best.

Renegades is the album I most listen to since they broke up.

Did you ever get a copy of their cover of "The Ghost of Tom Joad"? Good one. Really good.

Fake Palindromes is awesome. Better yet, according to his website, Andrew Bird is playing not one, but two shows at the Barking Legs Theatre on May 30. I'm practically drooling.
