Dan Johson Looks Longingly in Ron Littlefield's Eyes, Then They Kiss
By now folks have heard 'bout Dan Johnson's endorsement of Ron Littlefield for Mayor post last nights election. It's nice to know the good ol' boy political establishment still has some moxie left in it, even if its movement comes out of pure unadulterated fear that they've got little time left in this city.
So to Dan & Ron I raise a glass: your lackluster careers and lackluster lives would have provided a profoundly uninteresting and lackluster mayoralship. Dinosaours you are, and we respect you as the avatars of a dying political age where silver-spooned & small minded baby-boomers did little more than to offer up trite political aphorisms (and balloons) while maintaining no economic growth while maintaining deep-seated racial & cultural divides. You and your generation's lack of vision, was well, visionary.
To Ms. Coulter: while everyday I ask that you show a little public spunk, you're the only progressive candidate in the race. Even though I live in St. Elmo and we see none of that downtown development goodness, I know what's good for the downtown will inevitably be good for those of us in the outlying neighborhoods.
All I ask is that you let us put speedbumps on St. Elmo avenue and that maybe you swing by the office and give me a hug. You do that and I'll personally go door to door in my neighborhood to campaign for you in the next six weeks.
I should also mention Birkenstocks

When I lived in St. Elmo I thought that speed bumps (similar to what are on Tremont St.) needed to be put on Florida Ave. People would blow past our house going 20 - 30 mph over the speed limit. That said, I don't think speed bumps on St. Elmo Ave. is going to solve the problem of congestion.
Yes, speed bums would slow the traffic down, but now that I live in North GA I drive through St. Elmo every day and generally I do not see people driving at extreme speeds (compared to what they did at my former residence). Traffic usually runs around 40-45 mph.
Not that I'm trying to justify speeding, but I think that the larger problem with St. Elmo avenue is the volume of traffic. Putting in speed control devices won't solve that problem at all, especially since Walker County is growing (my subdivision as one example).
The city council and mayor ought to revisit the proposal to build a St. Elmo bypass through Alton Park. A plan was ready to go between GA and TN several years ago, but William Cotton squelched it since it would have required the demolition of something like 13 homes. The route would have gone from Hwy 193, past the Velsicol chemical plant and dumped out on Market St. by Howard High.

Since when does "progressive" necessarily equate to good?
Posted by: RobU at March 2, 2005 10:21 PM
Rob who knows? Nobody was saying progressive necessarily equates to good.

I was just curious what your comment about Ann Coulter being the only progressive candidate means. To me, that word conjures up negative emotion as it is the word associated with Air America Radio, a network of imbeciles as far as I'm concerned. Does that word carry a different meaning in this context as far as you are concerned?

Rob of course.

So, "Utne Reader" progressive or "Harper's" progressive?

I believe in this context, "progressive" is in contrast to "good ol boy"
