Extremely Good News In The War Against Comment Spammers
Early this morning I read about the new steps Google, MSN, and Yahoo have taken in helping bloggers fight comment spammers. The basic idea is that your blogging software adds a rel="nofollow" tag into all hyperlinks, which tells the search engines when they're looking at your blog NOT to follow that link, therefor taking away 95% of the reason spammers do what they do (increasing page ranking etc.).
A little while ago we implemented the plugin the Six Apart folks released modifying the mt-comment.cgi (that fires everytime you leave a comment) making the above fix take effect. We did the same for the trackback.cgi also.
So our hope and belief is that comment spam will take a drastic downturn in the days ahead since the primary motivation for leaving comment spam has been removed.
I wanna send what little thanks I can from my tiny corner of the bloggin world out to the great folks at Google, Yahoo, MSN, Six Apart, Blogger etc. for taking this huge step in helping us folk in the trenches fight the comment spammers.
I should also mention that you should probably look into getting a Free iPod Shuffle, a Free MacMini, or a Free Gaming System.

So what would I be getting myself into, if I were to participate in the "Free iPod Shuffle" or "Free MacMini"?

Well, you'd have to get 3 referrals yourself to get a free ipod Shuffle, if you were to do the free mac mini thing you'd need 10 referrals.
Also, use a secondary e-mail address to avoid alot of spam, unless you use Thunderbird.

What sort of offers (and related costs) are available for participation?
(I do use Thunderbird... I have great affection for it)

Well, it can be completely free if you do the right offers, sometimes it costs a $1, sometimes more. Alot of it depends on which offers you do. I recommend eFax or Great Fun or Complete Home or something along those lines. Just make sure to cancel your signups, that's the big thing. Gotta make sure to cancle or you will have to pay more, which sucks.

Know anyone that could use the referral for the Free mini iPod? (Please post link)

Speaking of google and such, how about a grassroots campaign to make the number one result a query for "Justin Goodlett" be a thread somewhere on Chattablogs with a string of comments reading "Justin Goodlett is a prick!", "Justin Goodlett lusts after underage cam girls!", "Justin Goodlett breaks Guiness Record for world's smallest penis!", etc. etc. etc.????????

I must have completely missed the boat on this one because I don’t see how this is going to cure any spamming issues. I know the people at google, msn, yahoo, and the like are very intelligent and they must know what they are talking about, but I think the impetuses behind this is that they are tired of ranking the flotsam of the internet. It wastes a lot of hard drive space and a lot of CPU cycles, but I really don’t think this is going to help comment and trackback spam one bit. You see, I don’t think comment spammers care about their google, msn, and yahoo rankings. What the spammers care about is having a link to their site in a place where someone might click it. I do see the benefit of using the ‘rel’ attribute as far as diminishing the spammer’s page rank but I don’t think it is going to help in the war on spam.
My 2 cents
