The 5th Dimension - "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In"

I went through this strange phase when I was 16 where I'd thank the Lord for the strangest pop cultural elements: cereal I liked, a comic book, television show theme songs, and one time, for the movie Forrest Gump. I have no idea why mind you. I did watch the movie alone in my room and found it particularly moving, the movie, not my room. Looking back I think just about every random cultural artifact I thanked the Lord for was partaken of while flying solo. I wonder if there's something to be learned from that...

But back to the issue at hand: I bought the Forrest Gump soundtrack largely for the Credence though that "California Dreaming" was a catchy ditty (Momma Cass has always held a special place in my heart). I traded in two Newsboy's albums and the Boyz 2 Men album "II" (which I had received from an ex girlfriend for Christmas a couple years earlier). I managed to receive enough store credit to buy the album, and I think I still had to fork over 3 bucks.

But for some reason the 5th Dimension song stuck with me off that album the most, in particular the "Let The Sunshine In" 2nd half, which launched me on a Motown/James Brown kick. It was on this kick that I was first introduced to Barry White, for which I am forever greatful, as Mr. White visits my playlist nearly every day (helps when you have every one of his albums loaded onto iTunes).

The song itself to this day weirds me out with its bizarre Cali-Hippie Bay Area Psychedelic rock meets Motown. I listened to it a good bit my first few months in California and it makes me think of wandering around downtown Grass Valley board with little to do but resent the fact that I was a good 3 years behind the current California styles n' trends. I hadn't even heard of Airwalks, nonetheless bought a Billabong or Mossimo t-shirt. The coolest thing I had was a flannel shirt I ganked from my Dad's closet (a' la grunge) and a "No Fear" t-shirt.

up next: 10K Maniacs (because the night belongs to lovers, and they love to rub it in your face; especially that Natalie Merchant weirdo)

E-mail me, would you? I've got some questions for you that I don't want to bog your blog with. And...I miss you.

Josiah,

I can't find your address or I'd email you, but my blog is severely acting up in the way of comment-related things and I need help. Will you email my Cov address so I can tell you specifics? Many, many thanks.

Oh, for the days of flannel shirts and Newsboys albums! Ow, ow, ow. If anyone ever goes back in time I hope they don't tell my fourteen year old self that I'd outgrow "Take me to your leader." It would have made me very sad.

Josiah,

I keep getting this message when I try to "save" a post. "Saving entry failed: Duplicate entry '20164' for key 1" Is there something that can fix this?

Ah, nostalgia. I love that 5th Dimension song, and have since about 6th grade when I heard it covered by CC group PFR. Sad, yes. But so so so many fond memories.
