Landfill Coming to Southside Chattanooga
Rumors have been floating around for awhile, and their true. A landfill is coming to southside chattanooga where the old Wheland Foundry used to be.
Here's an image of the permit for the landfil, with a map of its location:
I'll throw in my two cents: I think this is a ridiculously horrible idea. Don't get me wrong, landfills are a necessity, gotta have them somewhere, just not in the hottest area of town in terms of residential and commercial development! The Wheland property is prime real-estate, and a landfill would just be a waste!

Actually I think you are confused about which Wheland property they are talking about. My understanding is that this is not proposed for the large Wheland site where they are currently demolishing the industrial plant but rather for one of the secondary Wheland sites. In this case the site is on the other side of Broad St. from the main site, between Broad and Market. Don't get me wrong, this is still a horrible place for a landfill, perhaps worse than the main Wheland property in that it is more in the middle of things, however it isn't the same prime real-estate where say a Wal-mart might be going.
I know there are some that might think that a Wal-mart is worse than a landfill, but I will leave that for others to discuss.

Why not, a landfill can't look any worse that the Sun Trust building. If you really want to improve the look of Chattanooga knock down and rebuild or renovate every building over 12 stories.
This is the first I have hear about the landfill, doesn't make me feel any better about turning around our population since the 200 censes.
We are doing a lot of building and no growing. That scares me.

A landfill that close to the public and the river? I don't think it will make it, and if it does, it makes for a perfect public nuisance suit. The stench from landfills is terrible, and it's not like you can keep it w/in the boarders of the property. Plus, there's got to be some danger to the health and safety of the surrounding public. Of course, I think you'd have to get around the governmental immunity issue. Any of you out there more familiar w/ property law please weigh in.

Geez man, doesn't that stretch of S. Broad STINK horribly enough already? Isn't it bad enough to have that bridge over Chattanooga "Homeless Community Functional Latrine" Creek? Maybe I should move back to Alabama!

such a foolish idea! Chattanooga creek is one of the most polluted creeks in the south and this will only make the area worse, not to mention scare away any residential opportunities, toutisism, or future development in the area. Who in the H allowed such a thing to happen?!?!

Frankly I don't know what you wimps are so scared about?? I mean comeon this is the scenic CITY! We'll make it a tourist trap. The amazing LAND FILL COME ONE COME ALL TO SEE TRASH!!!! FROM ATLANTA TO NASHVILLE! PRENTED YOU"RE A BUM AND ROOT THROUGH IT!
I plan on milking this opportunity. Though I must say on a serious note, landfills have become some of the most prettiest areas some 10 years after they were started. I know many a places where it has turned into a beautiful landscape once the land fill is complete. So it'll look ugly now and beautiful for our kids. And all landfills must go through strict water run off regulation and monitoring... at least in more midwestern areas of the country where people care moer about the environment.
