George Lucas is a Has-Been
My fav versions of the Star Wars films are the originals that have been THX enhanced. The extended versions didn't move me much, but they were cool in a manner of speaking.
Anyways, here's a quote from Lucas, in a recent interview, about the impending release of the first 3 films on DVD, note, the first three extended re-release films, not the original 3. Anyways, if this quote is completely evidence that Lucas had a great idea, did some cool stuff with said idea, nd then went completely out of his mind I don't know what it will take to convince you.
"Ultimately, I'm going to probably move it [the star wars world] into television and let other people take it. I'm sort of preserving the feature film part for what has happened and never go there again, but I can go off into various offshoots and things. You know, I've got offshoot novels, I've got offshoot comics. So it's very easy to say, "Well, OK, that's that genre, and I'll find a really talented person to take it and create it." Just like the comic books and the novels are somebody else's way of doing it. I don't mind that. Some of it might turn out to be pretty good. If I get the right people involved, it could be interesting."
Boy, for a guy who's so dang controlling about making his movies, to the point that they're crap, he's pretty lackadaisical 'bout turning of his story & world to somebody else. Unfortunately he didn't realize a. he's a crap director and b. he should have never directed the prequels himself and instead given it to somebody with actual directing talent. Irvin Kershner, please help us!

Star Wars just seems like a silly dinosaur to me. I highly doubt the series will ever have any power again or even be taken to seriously (other than being a historical landmark) He should just throw the idea in the vault and never touch it again.

Josiah, I agree with everything you've written about Star Wars here -- especially the part where you penned "he's a crap director." Right on, that.

I think the South Park episode where they mocked Lucas' inability to leave his movies alone just about said all that needs to be said.

What makes me sad is that I fell in love with the old episodes as a child. Nowadays it drives me crazy to see this crap director completely messing up the trilogy. I know I will go watch The Return Of The Sith even though I will surely mad at Lucas afterwards.

Putting them out in the domain to let others work on it sounds like a great idea. I think the idea of Star Wars is very rich and far from exhausted (as opposed to Star Trek, which seems to me to have been tapped dry). The comic books and novels show that the story can go in numerous directions profitably. I've read only a handful of the comic books, but the ones I read were interesting - way more than the latest prequels.
