Have Business? Need Crappy Website?
There are web-dev companies I take seriously in Chattanooga, and then there are those I don't. Then there are these guys, in a category all their own. They just called me a few minutes ago asking us (coptix) if we needed a website.
Uh ya, right.
Their site is hours of enjoyment for you web folks out there. I mean, holy crap. Check out their "southside special", which they spell "southwide". Our favorite is the Santa Clause site and soaring wings. I thought hack-job companies like this were over post-dot-bomb, looks like a few slipped through. It's like a 9th grader from 1996 made these sites on tripod, and now that he's all grown up, he's gotten his own domain. Please, PLEASE go away. You're giving us all a really bad name.

For a minute there, I thought my old company had gotten into the web design business. I wonder if Chaplain Rod is a cool guy...

ugh. that makes me sad. but there IS a market for crap. people like cheap crap. or at least they like cheap, and someone is a good enough salesman to make them think their crap isnt so crappy.

Their page "Why our prices be so low" or whatever the error-ridden eyesore was called was hysterical. My day is infinitely improved.

did they rip off the clouds from the simpsons' opening credits on the intro to the soaring wings site?

yeah sites like that have pretty much made me not want to call myself a web designer, right now I'm trying to come up with a new name for what I do :)

Ha I like the part that says "why are our prices so low?" ha, I can think of a reason.

Yeah that site is pretty funny. He actually called me one day to see if I would work for him doing design work and even at the crappy job I was working at the time, all it took was one look at that website to know that I didn't want anything to do with that company!

One more thing...Back when my wife and I moved to Chattanooga about 3 years ago I called SurfnChattanooga to see about working for them as a web designer. The guy who owns it told me that he was smarter than me and that he was older and that they didn't need any "pixel pushers." Well when I visit their site, I think that the first thing they need is a navigation system other than one drop down box and what is with that ?sun? in the corner and the dude surfing? Do they really expect you to take them seriously even if they all have PhDs that are in no way related to web design? Come on!

I blame the way web developers are educated. 85% of books (and 99.999% of Internet tutorials) are horribly outdated and error-ridden, and almost none of them address design issues. These days, I get equally irritated at well-coded crappy design and awesome design crappily coded. If it fails in both categories, well...
Oh well, one would hope these developers would improve; you have to start somewhere, after all. When I think back to the sites Paton and I were building back in the 90s, I kind of shudder, too. It's like finding all that poetry you wrote in Jr. High.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Having an unwarranted attitude about your development abilities -- VERY annoying.

it's probably best not to start telling stories about surfN...we'd be here a very very long time, and it wouldnt be very nice. and it would make me sad.

That "Soaring Ministries" site....man....who ever designed that should not be allowed to post stuff like that!
