WUTC going to crap?
Some of you may have heard but WUTC here in Chattanooga is getting turned all inside out. Supposedly for awhile now there's been a huge conflict between the DJ's and the station managers over what music the play etc. Basically, the DJ's want to pick the music they want to play and the station manager wants to pick all the music the station plays, or, well, at least define in a much more specific fashion what gets played.
So anyways, this whole fight went to the trustees at UTC and they sided with the station manager. So the station manager guy, I think his name is John McCormack, sends out this notice that all DJ's have to play only music approved by him, and that he's changing the station to being primarily an NPR station (with lots more all things considered and fresh air) with just music occasionally and most of that music would be light jazz.
So, some folks may be resigning, Mary Ann quit and rumor has it a couple of other DJ's may be doing the same. I think Richard is in India or something and hasn't made a decision, I reall hope he doesn't leave.
All this after WUTC's best pledge drive ever this spring. Ticks me off. I love WUTC, especially, ESPECIALLY its lunch hour and late evening music. I can only handle so much NPR, especially "all things considered."
Oh, I also just heard that the reason they're doing this is to get more corporate sponsors, its all about $$.
They need to fire whomever is responsible. WUTC should ALWAYS be a local station, focusing on local content with local programing. NPR should be a garnish.

I think WUTC and WAWL plays crappy music, I would like to see WUTC myself become more like Talk radio 102.3 FM ANd letting the djs play their own playlists is what makes their shows worth listening to. I don't like alternative music anything after Nervina came out sucks anyhow. So bring back the local regional and classic pop/rock artists orf yesteryears!

Again Tony, the wizardry of your comments is truly inspiring. It is always great to have no idea about what you are talking about when you comment.

WUTC DJs should be able to play whatever they want. That is what public radio is all about. Even if I don't care for a particular song or program I still support public radio on a fundamental level! I will be signing any legitimate petition to keep things as they are!

Does WUTC carry "This American Life"? I can't remember from my days in Chattanooga.

Before you go blasting the station management get your facts right and name the right people. Any idiot can at least take the time to go to the website and see who does what.

yes Sally, but as many would attest to, I'm not just "any idiot."

In light of the WUTC debacle, I found this enlightening...
and a trend,
even if in only some small way, we can certainly not only live without, but condemn.
Could there be some corporate shennagans at work here?
(excerpt)
"In the media, as in any industry, big corporations play a vital role, but so do small, emerging ones. When you lose small businesses, you lose big ideas. People who own their own businesses are their own bosses. They are independent thinkers. They know they can't compete by imitating the big guys – they have to innovate, so they're less obsessed with earnings than they are with ideas. They are quicker to seize on new technologies and new product ideas. They steal market share from the big companies, spurring them to adopt new approaches. This process promotes competition, which leads to higher product and service quality, more jobs, and greater wealth. It's called capitalism.
But without the proper rules, healthy capitalist markets turn into sluggish oligopolies, and that is what's happening in media today. Large corporations are more profit-focused and risk-averse. They often kill local programming because it's expensive, and they push national programming because it's cheap – even if their decisions run counter to local interests and community values. Their managers are more averse to innovation because they're afraid of being fired for an idea that fails. They prefer to sit on the sidelines, waiting to buy the businesses of the risk-takers who succeed.
Unless we have a climate that will allow more independent media companies to survive, a dangerously high percentage of what we see – and what we don't see – will be shaped by the profit motives and political interests of large, publicly traded conglomerates. The economy will suffer, and so will the quality of our public life. Let me be clear: As a business proposition, consolidation makes sense. The moguls behind the mergers are acting in their corporate interests and playing by the rules. We just shouldn't have those rules. They make sense for a corporation. But for a society, it's like over-fishing the oceans. When the independent businesses are gone, where will the new ideas come from? We have to do more than keep media giants from growing larger; they're already too big. We need a new set of rules that will break these huge companies to pieces...."
