Discovery Times
I think I found my new favorite TV channel. While surfing the higher number channels last night I came across the Discover Times Channel, which is bread from the brilliant combination of The Discovery Channel and The New York Times. Unfortunately I've yet to see anything really funny, like Maureen Dowd doing swimming with sharks or David Brooks yelling at baboons, something like "baboon bobos" oh I dunno...
Anyways, I've seen two great tv-journalism pieces: the first is "Off to War" about a rural arkansas national guard unit heading off to Iraq, the second is Thomas Friedman (most of you Covenant folks will remember his book The Lexus and the Olive Tree from Global Trends) wandering around the Middle East asking Arab's what they think about 9-11. I've always found Friedman fascinating, if only because he's gotten enough notoriety now that he seems infused with either self-assurance or fearlessness in his journalistic probing. Seeing him yell at Yasser Arafat's chief political advisor while in Ramalah, this self described "geeky jewish boy from Minneapolis" was, quite frankly, stunning. Did he forget that Hamas was, quite possibly, right around the corner? Didn't seem to scare him one bit...
Anyways, there really is some fascinating stuff. That, ESPN News, HBO, and BRAVO are four conclusive arguments, in my book, for digital cable.
Oh, and for your amusement, I give you HAMTARO
