In Which Josiah Isn't Postmodern
Don't get me wrong, popular american culture frustrates me for its shallow and godless nature, and I know that my country has a many, many skeletons in its closet with a past ugly with stories of the horrible mistreatment of Native Americans & slavery & racism.
But, when a see something like the beheading of Nick Berg, shown and praised on arabic television, his murderers chanting "Allah is Great" while they commit such a vicious act: I cannot help but feel that in a very real way there exists irreconcilable and violent differences between the West & Arabic culture that will, without the unifying power of Christ, be resolved of or engaged in with anything less than violence and bloodshed.
And further, I cannot help but conclude from such a value-laden and powerful event that somehow, for whatever reason, the culture of islam is when compared to the culture of America (complete with its skeletons), horribly and twistedly deficient.
Many an evil has been commited in the name of Jesus. That's our history. What's sad is that the atrocities of Islam are not just in the past, they're a very real thing in the here and now. This is their crusades, and I hope they learn the error of their ways really quickly.
OK, I'm done being a modernist. You can now go back to your regularly scheduled cynicism.

I always thought capitalism had more to do with our current culture, and its concomitant lack of vicious beheadings, than religion.

Sin invites comparison.
I suppose it depends on your values. To me, to drop bombs on children (even "by accident") is at least as horrible as a beheading cum Allah-party.
Anyway, you seem to think that America has got its act together. That's a really weird idea. Where'd you get it?

what is absolutely certain, though, is that the demise of Christ Church in Moscow has prevented future violence in the Northwest.
and for this, i will take credit for undermining and totally capsizing the demonic work of so-called pastor douglas wilson.
never mind the beheading of a foolish jewish-american, who had nothing better to do with his life than to tick moslems off. instead, realize that the palouse and the entire Northwest is finally safe from the likes of douglas wilson.
and from his followers, too, who will blog themselves into oblivion once the internet shuts down.
my work is done here, you shall not be hearing from me like this again.
