March Madness

Every time March Madness rolls around these days its a bittersweet thing for me. I had my heart broken, twice, in the 90's with the Fab Five Freshman and then the Fab Five Sophmores. Then my hero Chris Webber went pro and thankfully ended up at the Sacramento Kings. We occasionally share moments, a quiet understanding between us, acknowledgement that we're both "in the know" but propriety dictates we ought not bring up the ugly past.

But I still pay attention. I still hate Duke. I despise them. I hate their unbelievablely high "bandwagon quotient" only rivaled by North Carolina. Don't even talk to me about Syracuse. I've been to that town. It's just another typical hole northest US town. Sure its not Scranton, PA but its still a dump.

But still, this post should be about this year, not the glory days of Michigan over Seton Hall by 1 point in the '89 championship game while my Dad and I drank Dr. Pepper and ate Doritos. This year by all accounts we've got a Division 1 free for all. Chalk it up to recruiting limits & highschools going pro. However you slice it its harder and harder for one team to dominate via a superstar or three. Which gives us games like yesterdays glorious upset of number 1 Kentucky at the hands of the University of Alabama Birmingham. Yes, UAB.

So who am I pulling for? I can tell you it certainly isn't Duke, UConn, Syracuse, Wake Forest, or Pitt. The only Big 10 Team to pull for is Illinois. My wifes side of the family are all Bama fans so you could say I married into their fan base. UAB gets my second place spot just 'cause I love the underdog. Then Illinois simply for being Big 10 and finally, wrapping it all up would be Georgia Tech, for Tim Montgomery's sake and so Jeremy Cox will have something to brag about other than his pansy 5 year old imac.

Now of course these pics are who I want to win, not necessarily who I think will win. Odds are I think it'll be St. Joe's or the Longhorns. The Texan backcourt I think is solid enough to do the job. But man...wouldn't I love to see a mid-seed team or two make the championship game. Give me the upset!

I'd say we have bragging rights, with a final four showing for next weekend. So much for both both St. Joe's and the Longhorns. I want to see an all ACC championship game; we have a score to even with Duke. Why does everyone think we are an underdog in all these games anyway?
