I'll Inter-Galactic YOUR Planetary
Boy, what a great way to start the day. The Beastie Boys are releasing a new album in June, hopefully on the 9th, which would make for a good birthday present.
I would also like to state publically for the record that Tyler Grisham publically has nothing to do with The Drone, if he did have anything to do with The Drone he would have to flee to the suburbs with all the rest of the scared white-folks. Tyler doesn't want to do that, he's busy with the gentrification of St. Elmo. I must note though, I find it interesting Tyler would threaten to "smack" me, given that I'm a good 4 inches taller and probably twice his weight. But perhaps I should be nice to him and offer him a job, mowing my lawn or something.
I'd like to give you an update on my recent iTunes purchases:
19. "Of Minor Prophets & Their Prostitute Wives" by Pedro the Lion - I find Pedro to be, in general anything by earnest or compelling. Most of the time listening to his albums I want to scream "damn it try harder, just TRY!" This song, and song 20 I think are genius.
20. "Diamond Ring" (Acoustic) by Pedro the Lion
21. "Coal Miner's Daughter" by Loretta Lynn
22. "Title & Registration" by Death Cab for Cutie
23. "The Sound of Settling" by Death Cab for Cutie
24. "Whiskey Kisser" by Blitzen Trapper
25. "Ansel & Emily Desader" by Blitzen Trapper
Now I'd like to say a little bit on songs 24 & 25 by Blitzen Trapper, largely because I know one of the band members read my blog. I'll preface with saying I've only listened to these two songs, but they were the two that really caught my ear with their 30 second sound bites on iTunes. I realize these sound-bites can be misleading, since some of the best sections of a song they can completely miss.
But onwards: I've gotta give huge props for the production done on both of these songs. I particularly love the 1:50 mark of Ansel & Emily, when the guitar kicks in stereo with those really bizarre almost submarine echo effects previously. Dang good stuff.
But I'm by no means an ideological purist. I wont try to justify my selfishness on the altar of some kindof virtuous inter-subjectivity, even if I might think its the case. Really, I just like to hear a really good tune the hooks me and moves me. While Whiskey Kisser is fun, and Ansel & Emily Desader is light like a fall afternoon raking leaves in the backyard, these two songs still feel like an excercise in songwriting and musical ability. I wanna hear something from the soul.
But again, it's only two songs, and yes Marty, I'm gonna get the entire album. I'm hooked, and I'll have more thoughts later.
And Marty, if you ever wanna come play a gig in Chattanooga, I can swing you a decent amount of publicity in a few places like the Pulse & NPR, and all over Chattablogs etc.

Josiah, I have a suggestion for you, because I know you're an open minded guy. Use your next freebie to pick up something by Del the Funkee Homosapien... preferably from his album with Dan the automator, Deltron 3030 (s/t) -- "3030", "Virus", "Memory Loss", or "Battlesong" (I recommend them in that order), failing that, something off his solo album "Both Sides of the Brain." "Time is too expensive", "Jaw Gymnastics", and "Proto Culture" (especially that last one, its Del and another guy, Khaos Unique, rapping about video games) are all great. I promise you'll like it. Del is Ice Cube's way more talented cousin, his flow is, well, ill.

Just curious, Josiah... I'm wondering if the current total of 53 responses to the blacksketball article of the Drone is a record? I'd like to pump my ego a little.
