The Sounds
I stumbled acorss something weird today that 'caused me to burn up half a dozen or so of my ever-building trove of free iTunes songs via Pepsi. It's a band called The Sounds.
They're Sweedish, and I think they're supposed to be something like The Clash meets, uh, well ABBA. In fact, I'll say with certainty that if The Clash & ABBA got drunk at a party & hooked, their bastard child would probably be The Sounds. Pretty much its everything that completely frivolous perfect pop should be. Don't ask me to tell you if they've got some kinda political/philosophical schtick. I'm not sure there's a thoughtful line in the half a dozen songs I've listened to.
But I'll tellya, every last one of them was like riding down to the corner store on my 18 speed when I was 14, buying a Butterfinger & RC Cola, and then swapping baseball-cards with my friends on the corner. It's just pitch-perfect meaningless pop.
Of course, the review on Pitchfork makes a good point: isn't there a point which we need to grow past this stuff? I say of course, it's half the reason why I give these guys so much flack about being Linkin Park junkies, but man, if I ever reach the point where I can't occasionally sit and bop to some earnest pop, well, I hope Andrew W.K. shows up and starts a party! party! party! in my living room.
