Sports in the Cold War
I still remember cold war stuff, even though I was just hittin my teens as the Wall fell. I sitll remember the Soviet Union & Communinism as this ominous evil the was seeking to undermine all that was good and pure and holy about being an American. Call it Reagan being President and my dad having fought in Nam. My DVD collection includes both Red Dawn & War Games.
Anyways, I've seen it numerous times, on ESPN classic and in other places, the famous US vs. Soviet Union hockey game in the 1980 Olympic Semi-Finals where the US finally won, and it hadn't beaten the Soviet Union I think ever.
Well, they're finally making a movie about that game. It makes me very happy. I haven't seen a great sports movie since, well Rudy (even though I watched The Mighty Ducks about 20 times at the local dollar theater). I have a feeling Miracle will be that perfect blend of Disney emotionalism, fast hockey action, and US-the-underdog-takes-all against those Commie Pinko Bastards. So, well, I'm really looking forward to it.

Man! That looks awesome. Kurt Russell looks really in character with that 'do.

It might be good, but they'll probably disneyfy the story and ruin it. Sorry, I can't help being pessimistic when it's hollywood and Disney we're talking about.

I like how we're keeping the cold-war spirit alive by continuously using the Russians as bad guys, particularly in video games. I've been paying Metal Gear 2 and Freedom Fighters lately, both of which use the commies as the bad guys. Something just feels right about it; it must be ingrained socially or something.

Red Dawn is still one of my favorite movies. something about living in the woods killing commies just appeals to me for some reason.

i think there should be more movies about kicking france's ass, instead. i mean, really, they suck a lot worse than russia. master and commander was great and even though you never really got a picture of the french or a reason why you should hate them, you just did because you innately know you should. awesome.

dp, in the books that Master and Commander is based on, apparently the bad guys are the Americans (the story being set during the war of 1812 and all), but they changed it to the Frence because it wouldn't have gone over so well right now to have the British hunting down and trying to kill Americans.

in We Were Soldiers [i think] the opening scene is the french getting ambushed and terminated with extreme prejudice. granted i think its by the vietnamese...but still. heh heh, they got mowed down by Charlies.

living here in russia gives me an open eye to the cold war. seeing paintings in school walls depicting nuclear fall out and how to survive it is definatly a surreal thing. i hear the same storys that my mom and dad tell me when i talk to "old timers" about the cold war. of course the "bad guy" and "good guy" have changed since i stepped off the plane, but thats expected right?

I love how the posts gradually changed from being about this movie to the french back to the soviets, its like weird game of telephone.
Anyway the movie looks dang good and not disneyfied, and if disney does one thing well is make cheesy overemotional sports movies that make us remember why we're americans, took kick someone's butt in sports. Plus the movie's gonna rock period, end of story, how can i say that.? Simple its about the worlds most intense sport, Hockey. THink of the great movies about hockey, Slap Shot, a true piece of comic genious. Mighty Ducks, the American Rags to Rich story. Mighty Ducks 2, the American Rags to riches story again. Mighty Ducks 3, the American riches against riches story where the JV team beats the varsity team (that one was kind of lame). But there's also Mystery Alaska, which i never saw but heard good things. There's Happy Gilmore... it has some hockey in it. There was that Steven Segal or Van Damme movie (it doesn't matter which one they're both the same) where he has to stop the bomb that's going to go off in the hockey stadium. There's Jason 1 through Jason In space (he had a goalie mask). The movies are endless, sort of, and classics, i guess. Hockey: where a team of grace and heart can defeat a juggernaut of jugs. Plus its great that Kurt Russel is finally doing something of meaning, I mean Soldier? Come on what kind of crap was that. I don't even think he had one line in the whole dang thing. Plus i think its a good tribute to Coach Brooks who passed away this year, a true american hero... who had a mullet.

1. I need a quote about your motives for creating Chattablogs and its sister sites, and your vision for what they can become. Nothing too sophisticated, just a sentence or two I can quote.
2. I need some technical info: who did most of the coding for the site? What it's done in? Where has Chattablogs been hosted and where is it now? What's it running on? About how many page views do we get a month all told?
That's pretty much it.

Holton, I saw Mystery Alaska and it wasn't all that great. Maybe it's just that I'm not a big Russel Crowe fan, but it sure seemed like he played his character exactly the same as he played Maximus in Gladiator. He did this big rousing speech to the crowd at one point, and I kept expecting him to say "are you not entertained, is this not why you have come?" Oh yeah, and he kept losing his American accent, which wasn't even very good in the first place.

I think its retarded how they make so many anti-Russian movies and games. How about they make some movies or games where Americans are the bad guys. That would be so awesome!
