I've always dug the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They're a great, great band to just funk out a groove to, whether by yourself bustin' out some sweet air-guitar action in your living room, or with a group of crazy hall-mates before you take the field in battleball.
Sure sure sure, I probably don't have the indie-know-how to critique the band in the broad scope of musical tradition and this n' that etc. etc. etc. And I've been known to take sides on an issue largely because of loyalty/friendship. And I might be doing the same concerning the Chilli Peppers 'cause my bud Morris loves them like say....Holtie or John love U2.
But regardless of that, I still can't get over this review of the RHCP Greatest Hits album from Pitchfork. Reading it I just can't help but wonder if the reviewer was abused as a child or if Anthony Kiedis n' Crew wouldn't let him backstage at a concert or something when he was a teenager. Why all the hatin'?

I just picked up that new Greatest Hits record myself. I love it. Especially the newer stuff.

I generally like the old C-Peppers, but I've always felt they fell short in one way or another on each album. It seems to me that the like to write 8 or 9 great songs and then throw in 2 or 3 that are just trash. Why can't they give me 12 solid songs?

I'd agree with you booth...if it wasn't for their last two albums. They are both fantastic...all the songs are solid.

Although, my loyalty lies with U2, I think the Red hot chili peppers are the most innovative, creative, and ultimately cool band in america (U2's from Ireland, they're more global). I was listening to the Peppers on the radio this morning on they way to work, the song "...teachers...keep on teachin...preachers keep on preachin" I forget the name but the guitar, the pace, the lyrics it all is just really well done, and thats an older song. I think some of they're new stuff has gotten even better. Californication was one of my favorites. I've been very disappointed with American music lately, and I lack the energy or desire to get into Indie, alt whatever stuff but the Peppers have always given me hope that music is not dead in America.
